Born on March 7, 1925, in the sun-soaked island of St. John’s Antigua, Elfreda was a true daughter of the West Indies—full of strength, grace, and quiet determination. She lived a century of love, faith, and service, touching generations with her warmth, wisdom, and kindness.
Elfreda was raised with strong values, a deep sense of community, and a joyful spirit that never faded. She married the love of her life, the late James Elmes, and together they built a legacy rooted in family, faith, and resilience.
Elfreda was a nurturing mother to fourteen children. She was a pillar in her community and created a home that was a haven for all—a place where the aroma of Caribbean cooking filled the air, hymns echoed softly from her breath, and everyone felt welcomed.
She was known for her gentle smile, her hands that could both sew and comfort, her humor that would bring joy to a stranger’s heart, and her unwavering faith in God. Her fried dumplings were legendary, and so was the way she remembered every significant occasion and made each person feel uniquely special.
She leaves behind seven beloved children, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many cherished friends whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Brookside Funeral Home – Champions in Houston, Texas. The gathering of family and friends will begin at 11 am, followed by a Memorial Service at 12 p.m.
Her faith carried her through a century of life, and her memory will carry on in all of us.
