Our beloved Mary was a kind, generous, and selfless servant. She was a faithful daughter of her beloved savior Jesus Christ. She was a wife, mother, sister, Granny, Granny Mary, Mamie and friend to all her who knew her.
Mary grew up in Freeport, Texas and attended Brazosport High School where she graduated and was the Homecoming Queen of the class of 1965. After graduation, she attended Sam Houston State University and fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a school teacher. While attending Sam Houston State, she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority where she made life long friends. She was blessed to spend the next 30 years as an elementary school teacher where she had a tremendous impact on the lives of countless children. She retired from Parker Elementary in the Houston Independent School District in 1999.
Mary’s greatest day was the birth of her son Scott Townsend. Mary always said that Scott was her greatest accomplishment and joy of her life. Mary and Scott were very close, and enjoyed spending time together throughout her life.
In 1985 Mary met the love of her life, Ken, at a three-year old’s birthday party. They married two years later and celebrated 36 years of marriage together. Their life adventures included traveling the world and enjoying time with their family, especially their grandchildren.
Mary was particularly honored to be a member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo where she served as a Lifetime Committeeman. Mary joined the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 1986 and served along side Ken on several committees over the years such as Ticket Trailer, Resource Renewal and the International Committee. Through their philanthropy and support of the youth of Texas, Mary and Ken have been Grand Champion Buyers within the Lamb & Goat, School Art, Poultry and Swine committee auctions. Mary and Ken were also active sponsors of the Cherokee County Junior Livestock auction.
She was also proud to be a member of Amigas Para Ninos, The Shooters Club, Texas Coastal Cattlewomen, and The Silver Spur Club. With Ken as one of the original founders of Friends for Wishes, which benefits Make a Wish Foundation, Mary and Ken were generously able to grant several wishes. Mary was also a member of the First Baptist Church Texas City and enjoyed regularly attending service and Bible study. She also attended a Bible study with Rodeo friends that met multiple times a month.
Mary loved life. She was an avid reader who enjoyed cross-stiching, shopping and studying her Bible.
She never missed her grandkids events and loved being around her friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Kenneth Markham Hucherson; her parents Calvin Morris Mayfield and Margaret Young Mayfield, and her brother Robert Bruce Hayes. She is survived by her son Scott Townsend and his wife April, two grandchildren, Garrett Markham and Mary Ashleigh, and sister Carroll Murrell and husband Butch Murrell. She is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews, along with many close friends whom she considered family.
