As a child, Mary lived through the Great Depression where she and her siblings supported her family's farm by picking cotton and performing other similar duties. Mary graduated from Steven F. Austin with a degree in chemistry and math and started her career with a chemical company in Houston. Mary rented a room from her future husband's family and met Jack Edward Love on his return from World War II.
Mary and Jack were married on August 3, 1946. Mary taught 8th grade math at Burbank Junior High for over 25 years, and was a member of St. Stevens Methodist Church in Oak Forest.
Throughout her life, Mary loved her family and her ties to East Texas. Mary loved to cook for her family and her grandchildren enjoyed her pecan and pumpkin pies. Her family always looked forward to her Christmas cookies during the holiday season. She often sent "care packages" to her grandchildren while they attended college.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Edward Love, and she is survived by her two children, Marie McWhirter and her husband Bruce, Paul Love and his wife Barbara; three grandchildren, Lisa McWhirter, Jeff McWhirter, Elizabeth Morrison and her husband Jonathan and a great-grandson, Jack Thomas Morrison.
A service will be held at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77079, on Saturday, March 30 at 12:30 p.m., with the family receiving guests at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Houston Area Parkinson's Society or St. Stevens Methodist Church.
