Born June 20, 1931, in Elton, Louisiana, to Alcide and Marceline Morehead. Matilda was the seventh child born to this union of nine children. Her parents and siblings preceded her in death; Orealia, Amos, Ralph, Dort, Celia, Marshall, Millard, and Leola.
Matilda later met and married Willie Wright Sr. To this union, six children were born Donell, Willie Jr., Angela, Pamela, Lynell, and Terrence (preceded in death). She was devoted to teaching her six-children about the Lord. Her favorite bible verse to teach her children was:
At a young age, Matilda accepted Jesus as her savior and was raised in a Catholic home, later converting her faith to Baptist. She was an active member of Hill Zion Baptist Church, Houston, TX. She taught Sunday School, attended Vacation Bible School, and enjoyed singing in the choir.
A loving mother, grandmother, daughter, sibling, and friend, she was adored by many. There wasn't one person who met Matilda who didn't leave her presence without laughter, joy, and love. Matilda knew how to pull at your heartstrings, ask those tough questions, and was never afraid to speak her mind. She knew all the children that lived on her street by name and were a pivotal factor in shaping their lives by offering food, love, and sound advice.
Matilda worked for 15 years at Pilgrim Cleaners until her retirement. She loved her children and had a profound unconditional love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her spare time, you could find her outside in her garden, planting and tending to her flowers. Matilda was a jack of all trades as she built things, gardened, and mowed her lawn. She is survived by her five-children, Donell (Rhonda) Wright, Willie Wright Jr., Angela McMillian, Pamela (Robert) Williams, and Lynell Wright. Matilda leaves behind eleven grandchildren, Randy, Alicia, Britney, April, Robin, Courtney, Schelitia, Jordan, Kayla, Isaiah, and Shamika; thirteen great-grandchildren; a great great grandchild.; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Our family will miss her warm hugs, laughter, and holiday meals. We will forever cherish her legacy because we are her living legacy. She will forever be our Legendary Matriarch.
