Born on January 12, 1948, in Monahans, Texas, Mike lived a life dedicated to his country, his craft, and his family. In February 1968, he joined the United States Air Force, beginning a 21-year career that took him around the world, including a tour in Vietnam and assignments at bases throughout the United States. Serving as a Flight Engineer, he rose to the rank of Senior Master Sergeant and was honored with multiple commendations for his service. After retiring from active duty, he served in the Air Force Reserves for several more years and remained a committed advocate for fellow veterans throughout his life.
Following his military career, he applied his technical expertise in aviation maintenance for Florida Aircraft Leasing in Riverside, California, where he met Sheila. They later returned to Texas, married, and made their home for more than 30 years. Determined to further his education, Mike earned his Bachelor of Science in Applied Science & Technology while continuing his career as Maintenance Manager for Emery Worldwide and later Halliburton, before enjoying a well-earned retirement.
Mike had a knack for fixing just about anything—with a tool collection to prove it. He especially enjoyed working on cars, including his retirement project: "Jethro", a 1930 Model A truck. He also loved cooking and sharing recipes. Tamales with fresh jalapeños and stacked enchiladas were among his favorites, and his sweet tooth never allowed him to turn down a slice of German Chocolate Cake or Lemon Meringue Pie.
During retirement, Mike and Sheila enjoyed traveling the U.S. in their motorhome with their beloved dog, Toppi—exploring the land he had served and loved so dearly, and allowing Mike to see everything from the ground rather than from a military aircraft.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Sheila B. Young; his children, Michael Young (Lynette) and Amanda Leary (Michael); grandchildren, Miranda Young, Amy Huynh, Bradley Buzan, Zach and Lauren Christopher, and Owen Leary; siblings, Steve (Rita), Walter (Cherie), and David (Linda) Young; sister, Anna Beth (David) Evans; and sister-in-law, Linda (Young) Jarrett; along with five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Lee and Eva Maurine Young, and his brother, John R. Young.
A graveside ceremony will be held at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive on August 29 from 10:15-10:30, where Mike will be laid to rest with full military honors. The Patriot Guard will accompany his service. Please arrive at Houston National Cemetery in Lane 2 by 10:00 am.
Following the ceremony, the family welcomes you to join them to share memories of Mike over a memorial lunch reception at 1:00 p.m. at The White Haus Venue, 2527 Sciacca Rd, Spring, TX 77373.
In lieu of flowers (the cemetery cannot accommodate them), the family kindly asks that any donations be made to either The Parkinson's Foundation https://www.parkinson.org, Patriot Guard Riders https://patriotguard.org/tribute/ or Wreaths Across America www.wreathsacrossamerica.org
Mike Young will be remembered for his incredible strength, sharp wit, love of family, and unwavering dedication to the values he held dear. He was a true patriot whose legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the country he faithfully served.
