Miriam Gibson, also known as Bunny, was a devoted social worker, passionate line dancer, and beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, was born on February 21, 1938, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Rona Roebuck-Carter and Otis Carter. Accepting Christ at an early age, she dedicated her life to service, education, and community, leaving a lasting impact on everyone she encountered.
Miriam's passion for community engagement began as a teenager. She belonged to several youth groups and wrote columns for the Cleveland Call & Post, the local black newspaper. These early experiences led to Miriam’s continued pursuit of knowledge after graduating from John Adams High School. She continued at Central State University, Cuyahoga Community College, and Cleveland State University, where she majored in Social Work. Throughout her career, she compassionately, effectively, and tirelessly served the needs of underserved Cleveland communities in various capacities. Her dedication extended beyond her profession—she was also the president of the Rona Carter Scholarship Fund, reflecting her deep commitment to education and support for others.
After retiring, Miriam eventually moved to Houston, Texas, where she discovered a new passion: line dancing. She became the first president of the Houston Urban Line Dance Association (HULDA) and was instrumental in documenting and promoting line dancing as the organization’s first videographer and YouTube content creator. She deeply valued her HULDA family, encouraging and inspiring many to join the dance floor. Miriam’s devotion to line dancing as a senior fitness program earned her honors from the City of Houston Parks and Recreation and the Texas House of Representatives. Miriam also enjoyed swimming, writing, gardening, visiting the beach, and, above all, spending time with her family.
Miriam was preceded in death by her mother, Rona Roebuck-Carter; father, Otis Carter; aunts, Martha Roebuck and Dorothy Matthews; grandmother, Tina Roebuck; and cousin, Brenda Matthews.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Victoria and Cheryl (Darrell); grandchildren Joel (Heidi), Jenaya (George), and Pernell (Eva); and great-grandchildren Nixon, Cedric, Harmony, Juliette, Isaiah, Love, and Lina Marlee. Miriam’s extended family includes Jackki Boyd, Anita E. Osborne-Lee, Joan Edwards, Myrna Williams, Lucias Terrell, DeAndre Davis, Barbara Holmes, Paul Beard, her Tomball swim group, and many more—a testament to the many lives she touched.
