

On July 19, 1922, a beautiful baby girl, Leavergia Miles, the second child of four, was born to the union of Emma D. and Rev. Mack Miles, in Brenham, Washington County, Texas. After relocating to Houston, Leavergia used her God-given talents as apianist at several local churches, including St. John Missionary Baptist Church on Dowling. She was employed as a Food Service Manager at Fondren Middle School and later retired from F.W. Woolworth Retail Store in downtown Houston where she became Lead Mall Court Cook. Leavergia was later employed at Rice University- Milford House. She united in Holy Matrimony on March 23, 1948 to Joe Ellis Woods. To this union, two precious children were born. Leavergia and her husband joind First South Main Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. R.E. Edwards, Sr. In 1963, the two became founding and active members during the orginization of this great church, New Hope, named by her beloved husband of 26 years, under the leadership of the late Rev. Marvin V. Fletcher. She was a dedicated and faithful member. Leavergia was blessed to be the most seasoned senior member of this congregation and was known as, "The Mother Of The Church." Her presence will truly be missed. On Tuesday, early in the morning hour, Leavergia, surrounded by family, was granted angel wings to enter into eternal rest with the Lord. She will be greatly missed by all who came to know and love her.
