Olga Maria Silva de Planas

Olga Silva de Planas died on Thursday, September 17, 2015 after a severe stroke. Born October 27, 1922 in La Punta, Lima, Peru, she was the youngest of four sisters. Olga is survived by her daughter Maricarmen Planas-Silva, her daughter-in-law Monica Andrade, and grandchildren Pedro and Sofia. She is preceded in death by her father Remigio B. Silva, her mother Delia Arrus de Silva, her three sisters Delia, Laura and Ada, and her son Pedro Planas Silva.

For many years, Olga taught home crafts in primary and secondary school in Lima, Peru. Then, after she had her two children, she built her own business making cloth for babies and toddlers and selling them to individual families and stores like Sears Roebuck.

Olga had been for many years a member of the Legion of Mary. When she lived at a retirement community in Lima, Peru, she served as the president of the Legion of Mary chapter at that facility. Here in Houston, she was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish and, almost daily, participated in Holy Mass in Spanish at Holy Ghost Catholic Church.

Olga enjoyed singing very much, doing jig-saw puzzles, and sharing jokes. In Peru, she used to try to get discount from cab drivers by telling jokes. Some of her singing and declamation abilities can be appreciated in her own channel in YouTube.

The family and friends wishes to thank Olga’s caregivers especially the doctors and staff at Quentin Mease Geriatric Clinic and at the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Ben Taub General Hospital led by Dr. Hanania who provided expert and compassionate care during her last days.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with family and friends from half-past five in the afternoon until nine o’clock in the evening of Monday, September 21, at Advantage Funeral Home, 7010 Chetwood Dr. in Houston, where recitation of the Holy Rosary in Spanish will commence at half-past six o’clock.

The funeral Mass will be held at ten o’clock in the morning of Tuesday, September 22, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, 6921 Chetwood Dr, Houston, TX 77081.

The family and friends will gather for interment at St. Rose of Lima’s Catholic cemetery in Schulenburg, Texas following the Mass.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family asks that gifts be directed to the “Texas Expansion of Opus Dei” project, payable to the Woodlawn Foundation and mailed to 5505 Chaucer Drive, Houston, Texas 77005.

Olga Silva de Planas falleció el jueves 17 de septiembre de 2015 después de un accidente cerebrovascular grave. Nació el 27 de octubre de 1922 en La Punta, Lima, Perú y fue la menor de cuatro hermanas. Le sobreviven su hija Maricarmen Planas-Silva, su nuera Mónica Andrade y sus nietos Pedro y Sofía. Fallecieron previamente su padre Remigio B. Silva, su madre Delia Arrus de Silva, sus tres hermanas Delia, Laura y Ada, y su hijo Pedro Planas Silva.

Durante muchos años, Olga fue profesora de artes manuales en la escuela pública en Perú. Después de tener sus dos hijos, inicio su propio negocio de confecciones para niños.

Olga fue un miembro de la Legión de María durante muchos años. Cuando ella vivía en una comunidad de retiro en Lima, Perú, se desempeñó como Presidente de la Legión de María en dicha institución. Aquí en Houston, fue miembro de la parroquia de St. Vincente de Paul y participaba en la Santa Misa en la iglesia católica Holy Ghost (Espíritu Santo).

Olga disfrutaba mucho cantando, haciendo rompecabezas y gozaba contando chistes. En Perú, llegaba a obtener un descuento de los taxistas por contarles chistes. Algunas de sus canciones y declamaciones pueden apreciarse en el canal Olga Silva de Planas en YouTube.

La familia y amigos desean agradecer a los médicos y personal de la clínica geriátrica Quentin Mease y de la unidad de cuidados intensivos del Hospital General Ben Taub liderado por el Dr. Hanania por la atención y compasión mostrada en sus últimos días.

Todos están cordialmente invitados al velorio de cinco a nueve de la tarde del lunes 21 de septiembre, en la funeraria Advantage en 7010 Chetwood Dr. en Houston, donde la recitación del Santo Rosario en español comenzará a las seis y media.

La Santa Misa del funeral se celebrará a las 10 de la mañana del martes 22 de septiembre, en la iglesia católica Holy Ghost (Espíritu Santo), 6921 Chetwood Dr, Houston, TX 77081.

El entierro se llevara a cabo después de la Santa Misa en el cementerio católico de Santa Rosa de Lima en Schulenburg, Texas.

En lugar de recuerdos tradicionales, la familia pide que las donaciones sean destinadas para el proyecto "Texas expansión del Opus Dei", pagadero a la Fundación de Woodlawn y enviado por correo a la dirección postal 5505 Chaucer Drive, Houston, Texas 77005.
