Opal Mae Moore, daughter of the late William Earl Smith Sr and Johnnie Mae Burnet Smith, was born on September 9, 1950, in Durham North Carolina. Opal peacefully departed this life on February 16, 2024, entering eternal rest, with the hope that one day she will see us again.
She was preceded in death by her husband JT Moore, her parents William & Johnnie Mae her siblings John, James, Doris, Clarence Stubbs, Sharon SmithGreen and William Earl Smith Jr.
In Opal’s earlier years she was a quiet gentle soul with ambitions of a career in the medical field. She worked at Duke University and enjoyed her time with her siblings and their many outings. One of those outings led her to meeting her husband of 50 years, JT. Once married, Opal and JT started a family and moved to Omaha, Nebraska.
In Omaha, Opal was introduced to Jehovah and began to study the teachings of Jehovah Witnesses. Opal and JT were deployed to Bad Kreuznach, Rheinland Pfalz, Germany shortly after Opal’s introduction to the truth. It was in Germany that Opal was baptized and became a devoted Jehovah Witness for 51 years. After their deployment ended, they made their way back to Omaha, Nebraska where Opal was honored to have served as an Auxiliary Pioneer with the Jehovah Witnesses.
The family finally settled in Houston Texas in 1987, where Opal enjoyed her career as a CNA, and in her later years as a traveling Care Giver. Throughout the years Opal travelled extensively with her family and friends, as this was one of her favorite pastimes. She enjoyed the ocean, sightseeing and learning about other countries and cultures. One of her most memorable trips was going to the Bethel in upstate New York. There she was able to witness how the publications were made and fellowship with her spiritual brothers & sisters, a memory she spoke of and cherished deeply.
Opal leaves to cherish her memory, her children; Angelar Parker (Kevin), Katherine Moore-Devoe (Elza), Jonathan Moore (Lashanda), and Jason Moore, 20 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren (and counting). In addition, her sisters Billie Jean Smith, Ruth Smith, Beverly Smith and a host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, Brother & Sister-n-Laws, and of course her friends who all loved her dearly.
Opal’s legacy is vast and will live on for generations to come.
