Born in Houston, Texas on January 18, 1952, he spent many childhood years in an orphanage. One of the highlights of those years was playing the lead male vocalist in the orphanage traveling choir, as he had a beautiful singing voice. He played Amahl in “Amahl and the Night Visitors”, a very moving Christmas operetta. He always loved music and singing. Another passion of Perry’s was skydiving – he loved the adventure of it and always kept a photograph of his best jump!
A graduate of the U. S. Navy Supply School Storekeeper School in Newport, R. I., Perry served on a Naval Ship in Vietnam in charge of ship’s stores. Honorably discharged, he returned to Houston and had a varied career, including working as a procurement specialist for an oilfield services company in Houston.
Later in life, he provided skilled handyman services in his neighborhood, the Houston Heights, where he was in demand for carpentry, painting, various household repairs and caring for friends’ and customers’ homes and pets when they travelled. It was sometimes difficult to tell whether he was fonder of his friends or their dogs, whom he loved dearly.
Very proud of his Naval service, Perry always enjoyed the company of others who shared the military experience and could reminisce happily about those years.
As his ability to live independently declined, Perry relocated several times over the last 15 years. As a sign of friendship, Perry’s friends and neighbors always assisted with his moves, with time, furniture, clothing and gifts to make his various homes comfortable. During this time, he reclaimed his passion for reading and devoured mystery and military books, engineering journals and other types of publications. While living at New Hope Housing, he met the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and their picture was featured in the Houston Chronicle.
Due in part to his service in Vietnam, Perry’s health continued to decline and he passed his final years at Park Manor Cy Fair Nursing Home, where he received excellent care.
Special thanks to all of his friends and neighbors for their generosity, love and visits to Perry , to the management and staff of Park Manor CyFair who cared for him with excellence and compassion and to Hospice with Grace, who were with him at the end of his life.
Perry was predeceased by his parents, Jack R. and Wanda L. Weaver and other family members. Funeral Services Friday, January 17 at 11 am at Houston National Veterans Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston TX 77038.
