Ramon Fernandez

Ramon Fernandez, affectionately known as “Pipo,” was born in Los Palos, Havana, Cuba, on Sept. 1, 1924, and was called home to Heaven on Dec. 17, 2022 at the astonishing age of 98. Pipo was the youngest of six children and was born to Felicia Ramos and Ramon Fernandez. He was married to Flerida Gutiérrez Fernandez for 70 years, until she went to be with the Lord on April 18, 2017.

Even though Pipo only had a second-grade education, he worked hard throughout his life starting with farming, harvesting sugar canes, and eventually owned and operated a grocery store (bodega) in Güines, Cuba for over 10 years. When communism took over Cuba and confiscated his store, Pipo decided to flee his native country with his family. They arrived in Miami, Florida, on Sept. 25, 1970, in hopes of a better future.

Once in Miami, Pipo’s illness of leprosy intensified, and he was near death when he learned about Jesus and accepted him as his Lord and Savior. God performed a miracle over him and completely healed Pipo from this disease. From that point on, he and his family served the Lord and he started attending Iglesia Victoria in Hialeah, Florida under the leadership of Pastor Samuel Villareal. After spending several years in Miami, he and his family relocated to Houston, Texas, the city he called home for the last 46 years.

Pipo attended El Tabernáculo A/G Church for the majority of his life in Houston and later transitioned to Templo Poder y Gozo. He was able to participate in several church events and made many lifelong friends.

Pipo enjoyed spending time with his family, travelling, telling stories, and playing dominoes was his passion. Christmas was his favorite time of the year, he looked forward to preparing and roasting a pig with his family to ensure that this Cuban tradition was carried on to the next generation. He had a green thumb and loved to grow lemon trees and would gift the young trees to many of his friends and family.

He loved to ride horses and would skillfully tame them in his early years. He was also an avid wrestling and boxing fan and attended a Boxing Championship Match and WWF Wrestle Mania with his grandsons and son-in-law.

Pipo was a hard worker and an honorable man who would help his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with many life lessons and words of wisdom. He was a kind, loving man who was well respected and cherished by his family and all those who knew him.

He is survived by his four children, daughter Zunilda and her husband Arnaldo Gacita; Enilda and her husband Robert Silva; Lizette and her husband Alvaro Alvarado; and Guillermo and his wife Odalys Fernandez. Pipo also leaves behind nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed, but his family takes comfort in knowing that he is with his Heavenly Father and they will see him again one day.

Ramón Fernández, cariñosamente conocido como "Pipo", nació en Los Palos, La Habana, Cuba, el 1 de Septiembre de 1924, y fue llamado a la presencia del Señor el 17 de diciembre de 2022 a la asombrosa edad de 98 años. Pipo era el menor de seis hijos y sus padres fueron Felicia Ramos y Ramón Fernández. Una vez en Miami, la enfermedad de lepra de Pipo se intensificó, y estaba cerca de la muerte cuando le presentaron al Señor Jesús y lo aceptó como su Señor y Salvador personal. Dios hizo un milagro sobre él y sano completamente su cuerpo y su lepra desapareció dejandole solamente huellas como testimonio de la grandeza de Dios. A partir de ese momento, él y su familia sirvieron al Señor y comenzó a asistir a la Iglesia Victoria en Hialeah, Florida, bajo el liderazgo del Pastor Samuel Villarreal. Después de pasar varios años en Miami, él y su familia se mudaron a Houston, Texas, la ciudad a la que llamó hogar durante los últimos 46 años.

Tenía buena mano para cultivar árboles de limones y le encantaba regalarlos a sus amigos y familiares.

En su juventud le encantaba montar a caballo y domesticarlos en sus primeros años. También era un fanático de la lucha libre y el boxeo y asistió a un partido de campeonato de boxeo y a la WWF Wrestle Mania con sus nietos y su yerno.

Pipo era un hombre muy trabajador y esforzado. Un hombre honorable que ayudaba a sus hijos, nietos y bisnietos con muchas lecciones de vida y palabras de sabiduría. Era un hombre amable y cariñoso que era muy respetado y apreciado por su familia y por todos los que lo conocían.

Le sobreviven sus cuatro hijos, su hija Zunilda y su esposo Arnaldo Gacita; Enilda y su esposo Robert Silva; Lizette y su esposo Alvaro Alvarado; y Guillermo y su esposa Odalys Fernández. Pipo también deja atrás nueve nietos, trece bisnietos y dos tataranietos . Lo echaremos mucho de menos, pero su familia se consuela al saber que está con su Padre Celestial y lo volverán a ver algún día.
