It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Raphael Afolabi Akinfaderin, affectionately known as “Americana,” on January 17, 2025. Born on April 4, 1950, in Ilutitun, Ondo State, Nigeria, to Joel Akinfaderin and Janet Akinfaderin, he was the third child of his mother. A man of unwavering vision and determination, Raphael was a lifelong learner and a steadfast believer in the pursuit of excellence.
Raphael attended Birch Freeman High School in Lagos, Nigeria. He went on to earn his degree from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, in 1978. He returned back to Nigeria and completed his NYSC at the Ministry of External Affairs. His passion for learning continued into adulthood, culminating in a master’s degree in Hospitality Management from New York University in 2000.
Raphael’s professional career was both diverse and impactful. From 1980 to 1988, he served as the General Manager of Nigeria Airways, where his leadership in marketing, sales, budgeting, and public relations helped shape the airline’s operations during a pivotal period. His efforts not only strengthened the company but also earned him a respected place in the industry.
In the 1990s, Raphael shifted focus to social work in New York City, dedicating his time to supporting the foster care system and advocating for disenfranchised families. His tireless work helping vulnerable children find safe and loving homes, along with his advocacy for resources to uplift struggling families, left an indelible mark on many lives.
A passionate educator, Raphael also served as an instructor at Baltimore City Community College and later as a professor at Baltimore International College. He was committed to updating curricula, teaching with enthusiasm, and mentoring students, many of whom carry forward his wisdom and guidance in their careers.
Raphael founded Folabi Wood Processing and Furniture Factory, a venture that reflected his entrepreneurial spirit and love for craftsmanship. Later, in 2009, he became CEO of Discover West Africa, an organization dedicated to promoting the beauty, culture, and heritage of West Africa to the world. Through this work, Raphael sought to reconnect people with their African roots and share the richness of Nigerian culture with global audiences.
Raphael was known for his infectious laughter, his love of storytelling, and his profound belief in the transformative power of education. His wisdom and ability to inspire left an enduring legacy in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues, and students.
