Raymond’s humble beginning began on April 20, 1940 in Canton, China and was adopted by Kwey Shew Wong when he was seven-years-old. They made their way to America where Raymond studied and developed his strong work ethic at his grandfather’s grocery store. He rose before the sun to accompany his grandfather to the market to choose the best quality produce then attend school where he would learn English and other core subjects; and after school, he would return directly to the grocery store to work until bedtime. He learned how to manage a family business under the wings of his beloved grandfather. His grandfather often verbalized his confidence in Raymond’s future because he was intelligent and hard working and knew he would be successful in life.
Raymond and Kathy met in Fresno, California while Raymond visited family relatives. Kathy and Raymond were attracted to each other as they both knew common loved ones from the same village and spoke the same heart-language. Kathy thought Raymond was handsome and intelligent; Raymond thought Kathy was beautiful, kind and caring. They began to date and soon after married with the blessing of both their joyous families.
As they began their new lives together, and with some financial support from Kathy’s brother, Everett, Raymond and Kathy began a small Chinese take out restaurant stand in El Paso, Texas and grew it to include their first dining room and shortly thereafter, the addition of a second. In the midst of growing their business, their family grew as well. Bryan was their first born, then followed Lesley, Amy and Michelle. As the children grew up, they learned the family business and began to work at the restaurant where they learned diligence and commitment. The success of the business and their hard work and sacrifices of a 24/7 business paved the way for private school education, university and post-graduate studies. Through their emphasis placed on education, the investment resulted in meaningful and successful careers that provide for their families and the generations to come.
Because the restaurant business required much attention and commitment, Bryan, Lesley and soon to follow Amy and Michelle, attended a youth group at a local Chinese church. Through the very purposeful ministry of El Paso Chinese Baptist Church and many of its faithful members, the church reached out to the children of immigrant restaurant and grocery store owners to teach them and build them up to one day lead their parents to Christ. Both Raymond and Kathy later learned about the love and sacrifice of Christ and followed in baptism to proclaim their faith in Jesus. However, it is through the difficult experience of caring for, loving and letting him go in to the arms of God, that God used him to teach his family the greatest and most important lesson: to seek God and recognize their complete dependence as they released him in to the loving presence of God.
In retirement, Raymond and Kathy had the unique opportunity and blessing to live with each of their daughters’ families and aid in and watch the growth and development of their next generation. They have attended church and grew their community at both Houston Chinese Church and Fort Bend Community Church.
Raymond is survived by wife, Kathy, and his children: Bryan and his wife Iris and grandchildren Finn and Brooks; Lesley and her husband Kelvin Chong and grandchildren Emmitt and Emma, Amy and her husband Jim Copeland and grandchildren Alyssa and Ryan; and Michelle and her husband Moses Chao and grandchild Noah.
