Robert Miles Hatchett was born July 8, 1948, in Houston, Texas. He was an only child; and was raised in Third Ward by his mother, Cora B. Hatchett, and grandmother, Elizabeth Hatchett. Robert was baptized at an early age at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a Junior Deacon. He attended Blackshear Elementary School and graduated from Jack Yates High School. After graduation, he attended the University of Houston, majoring in accounting. In 2009, Robert united in holy matrimony with his wife, Debra.
Robert enlisted in the United States Marines in 1967, and served for eight (8) years. While in the Marines, he worked as a bookkeeper and received several awards including, one as a Rifle Sharpshooter. In 1975, he received an Honorable Discharge. After serving in the Marines, he worked as a draftsman. Later, he was employed by the City of Houston Metropolitan Transit Authority (Metro). Robert retired in 2000, from Greyhound. After his retirement, Robert volunteered for the Buffalo Soldiers Museum (NABVet). He never missed an opportunity to use his voice and time to encourage his fellow veterans, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), to seek counseling and assistance. His pride and joy were his grandchildren who affectionately called him, “Paw Paw.” On February 7, 2022, surrounded by his wife, family, and friends, Robert peacefully made his transition face-to-face with the Lord.
