He leaves behind his wife, Bonita, his best friend and true love of 51 years of marriage. His beloved son and daughter; Nathaniel Hunt of Houston, TX; Elisa Verrett Pontone and husband Scott Pontone of Houston, TX. His cherished grandchildren; Madeleine Verrett, Ryan, Dale, Tate and Harry Pontone. Loved siblings; Daniel Hunt; Sue Minor and husband Jerry; Lori Barrick and husband Brad; JoAnn Sullivan and husband James and Carolyn Davis and husband Keith. Special Cousin Randa Mirbaha and husband Mitch and wonderful nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his biological father, Robert (Bob)Viets; mother Zoe Marie Hunt and second father Carl Hunt; brother Michael Hunt.
Bob was born July 5,1951 in St Louis, MO and attended Catholic schools. His father, Bob Viets passed away December 15, 1959 when Bob was eight years old, the oldest of six siblings. This was a heartbreaking time for the whole family losing their Daddy so young. After this his mother had to go back to work to provide for the family.
Bob has always been curious and intellectually gifted. He tested and was more than qualified to attend Chaminade College Preparatory School, where he would have lived during the school year. Due to circumstances, he did not attend this prestigious school.
His mother, Zoe Marie, married Carl Hunt July 25, 1963 and he adopted all six children. The family moved to Cuba, MO where Carl bought an insurance company. On August 28, 1965, Zoe gave birth to her seventh child, Carolyn Marie.
Bob excelled in his studies graduating Valedictorian of his senior class and in sports setting records in track and field, basketball, baseball, swimming and diving. He had a love for music and could pick up any instrument and play. He managed to make it from Cuba, MO to the “Woodstock Festival”! He attended Michigan State on a National Merit Scholarship and was involved in the political unrest over Vietnam at the time.
Through friends at college, he was promised a job in Hawaii and his adventurous nature brought him to the Islands. This is where he met Bonita and they fell in love. Bob attended the University of Hawaii and started seeking spiritual truth to lead him. He read up on all the religions, sought out different philosophies, and at last decided to read the Bible and God spoke to him and changed his life to become a disciple of Jesus for the rest of his life.
Bob and Bonita were married March 23, 1973 in San Diego, CA. Bob learned his woodworking craft there and both were active in the church. Nathaniel was born there in 1974. They moved to Houston, TX to be part of a startup church connected to their church in CA. Elisa was born in Houston in 1976.
Bob continued to do custom woodworking, starting his own business and seeing it grow through the 80’s and 90’s. He loved working with his hands, solving problems and making something beautiful. He never wanted to retire.
He loved his family deeply, could always make us laugh with his witty humor and charm. He was so adventurous, did marathons, loved biking and swimming. At one time, we had season tickets to the Astros, Rockets and the Texans.
A wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend with wise conversations, a beautiful humble, loving spirit that touched all. We all treasure the memories you gave us.
Visitation for Bob will be held in the White Oak Venue of Memorial Oaks Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 from 6PM until 8PM.
Funeral services will commence on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at 11AM, followed by brief fellowshipping, before processing to Memorial Oaks Cemetery for the committal.
