A native of Gulfport, Bob was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Robert A. Mitchell (Claudia Griffith). Born on March 31, 1953 in Memphis, TN, Bob’s memory is cherished by his four sisters Sarah Blaine Mitchell (Tore Wallin) of New Orleans; Lindsey M. Ladouceur (Raymond) of Abita Springs, LA; Celeste M. Ogden (Richard) of Covington, WA; and Elisabeth C. Mitchell of Abita Springs, LA. He will also be missed by his five nieces Gabrielle B. Halprin (Bernard) of New Orleans, Mia W. Roberts (Jay) of Denver, CO; Emily M. Wallin of Los Angeles, CA; Stephanie M. Ogden of Billings, MT; and Rachel V. Bernstein of New York, NY; and two nephews Robert A. Ogden (Elaine) of Auburn, WA and Mitchell J. Bernstein of New Orleans, LA. Bob was also great uncle to Violet Halprin of New Orleans and Matilda Roberts of Denver, CO.
Bob graduated from Gulfport East High School and received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Mississippi in 1975. While at Ole Miss he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. After graduation Bob moved to Houston, TX, where he pursued a lifelong career in the energy business, traveling extensively and making many friends along the way; but his beloved Houston, which he considered “the coolest city in the world,” always called him home.
In Houston, Bob turned his passion for motorcycle riding into a philanthropy as a founding member of the Deacons of Deadwood Motorcycle Club, a non-profit charitable organization that has raised over $2,000,000 for children’s charities in the Houston area, including the Ronald McDonald House, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Boys and Girls Country, Camp for All, the Devereux Foundation and Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund.
Besides loving his two Harleys, Bob was an avid fan of his alma mater Ole Miss and was nicknamed “Rebel Bob” by his Houston friends, whom he taught to cheer “Hotty Toddy” along with him at every game on the big screen. Always a fierce competitor, he loved a good contest, whether it be the 2020 quarantine hair-growing competition, which he won of course, or a friendly wager on weekend football games, especially when Ole Miss played. And at the weekly Wednesday night trivia games, Bob was everyone’s favorite teammate, who could be counted on for all the answers to sports, music, TV and movie questions.
Bob will be interred at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery on August 21 at a 10:00 am graveside service, followed by a gathering at his favorite hang-out, Big John’s Ice House, where his many friends and family will celebrate his life and share memories of a life well lived.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.forestparkwestheimer.com for the Mitchell family.
