Rosetta Elizabeth Morgan (nee Anderson) was born in Smailfield, St Mary, Jamaica, on July 15, 1942. She was the last of five children born to Mrs Albertha Shuriah, and Mr Alfred Anderson. Rose attended Pear Tree Grove Primary School, St Catherine, and as most Jamaican children of that era, she took on the huge responsibility of helping to tend the family’s farm while also attending school and assisting in the care of her younger cousins.
Aunt Rose (as she was affectionately known) emigrated to Leeds, England in 1962 at the young age of 20 where she rejoined her older brothers Lloyd, and Abe who were already established there. While in England she worked as a seamstress, a hairdresser, and at Copperworks Foundry which at the time was the largest metal manufacturer in northern England. Being a fun-loving person Rose had many work friends, especially those who had also emigrated from Jamaica and therefore shared a common bond.
She formed an extremely close relationship with her sisters-in-law, Susan also known as Mammy-Sue, and Bertha. They would bake cakes on the weekend for parties and social gatherings and were known throughout the neighborhood and larger West Indian community as the go to ladies if ever in need of a great tasting cake for a special occasion or on a short notice.
While in England she met her husband Lionel Morgan and remained married until his death in August 2005.
In 1975, Rose decided to leave the shores of England in search of an even better life in the United States, and to be closer to family members. She quickly settled down in Mt Vernon, NY where she opened a successful bar and restaurant which was very popular with the locals. Again, she established many life-long friendships, however, after a few years she was ready for a change.
In 1979 she moved to Houston, Texas, her forever home where she worked at Westbury Hospital as a Certified Nurses Assistant for more than 25 years. In 2009 her older brother Lloyd also moved to Houston to reside with his beloved younger sister until his passing in 2021. She was his rock and devoted caregiver until his time of death. Her loving and protective relationship with her brother Lloyd was a bond most siblings could only wish for.
Rose (Mom) leaves behind four sons, Claude, Brian, Colin, and Jason. She also leaves behind her eldest sister Eunice. Additionally, she leaves behind grandchildren, Ashley, Aurielle, Rachel, Sebastian, Xavier, Seqoia, Anakay, and Christina, Oscar, three daughters-in-law, Erma, Holly, Lucinda and Jennifer, four nieces, eleven nephews, two great grand-children, and finally a vast community of friends and acquaintances. She is predeceased by her mother Albertha, father Alfred, sister Lynora, brothers, Lloyd, Abe and sisters in law Susan, and Bertha.
As we gather today to mark this tremendously sad occasion, it is important to remember that Rose’s passion for fun and fellowship was larger than life. As she always reminded me she loved the name Mom but her favorite name was Grandma. As we mourn the loss of the physical body…Aunt Rose’s spirit, the great memories, and the legacy she left us with will live on forever.
