Sally H Mathews

Sally H. Beverly Mathews was the fourth child of Cephas and Fannie Beverly. She was born in Evergreen, Louisiana on June 26, 1932. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age, and remained a living witness to this blessing until her death. She received her early education in Evergreen, Louisiana. She also attended Houston Community College, and received several certifications related to the field of health card. Her jobs in the healthcare industry followed her passion of taking care of others. On September 8, 1948, Sally married Clifton Mathews, who preceded her in death. She was a devoted and loving wife for over 60 years. To this union five sons and one daughter were born. In addition to her own children, Sally "mothered" many others, including her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many neighborhood children. She was known by many as "Mama Sally", because she displayed the unselfish kindness of a mother. She was an active member of East Bethel Baptist Church. She faithfully served in several ministries until her health began to fail. She was recognized for her service with the music department, youth groups, anniversary committee and others. Sally was also recognized for her volunteer service in the Houston Independent Schools. She was also a member of the Court of Calanthians. Sally was called home on Monday, March 4, 2013. She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Gwendolyn Lewis of Houston, Texas; five sons Clifton Mathews Jr., John Mathews, Jeffrey Mathews, Gary Mathews (Trina), all of Houston, and Ronnie Mathews (Wanda) of Dallas, Texas; three sisters, Rosalee Iles, Geraldine Hatfield (Wilson), Linia Lee (Larry), all of Houston; four brothers, Jewel Beverly, Louis Phillips Jr., Vernon Philips, all of Houston, and Daryl Phillips of Evergreen, Louisiana. Three brothers, Willie Arthur Beverly, Cephas Beverly Jr., and James Phillips preceded her in death. She also leaves to cherish ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and a host nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
