Sam G. Almquist Jr., originally from Robstown, Texas, and later a longtime resident of Livingston, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. He spent over 25 years living on Lake Livingston, a place that brought him comfort, joy, and a true sense of home.
A man of strong Lutheran faith, Sam lived his life grounded in Christian values, humility, and service to others. He was very active in the United Methodist Church of Livingston and served as president of his Sunday School class. His faith guided his decisions, strengthened him through life’s challenges, and shaped the way he loved and cared for his family.
Sam retired from Shell Oil Company after more than 30 years of dedicated service, a career that reflected his strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment. He took pride in providing for his family and believed in doing honest work with integrity.
Sam enjoyed the simple things in life and found great satisfaction in being outdoors, building, fixing, and working with his hands. He especially loved fishing, where he found serenity on the water and time for reflection. Lake Livingston was more than just where he lived—it was where he felt most content.
He was known for his steady nature, strong work ethic, and quiet kindness. Sam valued family, loyalty, and friendship, and those who knew him will remember his gentle spirit and willingness to help others.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Marie Almquist. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Wanda Almquist; his daughter, Cyndy Thompson and husband Darrell; his son, Ken Almquist and wife Lisa; and his daughter, Sherri Peltier and husband Randall.
He is also survived by his six grandchildren: Dustin Ward and wife Krystal, Shaun Ward and wife Jennifer, Nathan Sprague and wife Joyce, Micheal Almquist and wife Katelyn, Amanda Sprague and boyfriend Cali Lessa, and Steven Almquist; and his great-grandchildren: Chelsea Ward, Colton Ward, Ashtyn Ward, Emersyn Ward, Samuel Almquist, and Madeleine Almquist.
His family takes comfort in knowing he now rests in the eternal peace promised through his faith. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
A graveside service celebrating Sam’s life will be held on February 12, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77079.
