Samuel was born in Cleveland, Texas on August 18, 1931, to parents David Lee and Esther McClain. He graduated from Splendora High School and received additional training while serving in the United States Navy. Samuel joined the Navy after graduation as a helicopter mechanic and helicopter rescue squad team member on the aircraft carrier USS Tarawa CV-40, and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict from February 1, 1951 to January 13, 1955.
He met Mary Alice Carroll in San Diego, California, and they were married on December 28, 1957. After separation from the Navy, Samuel returned to Texas and set up residence in Houston, building a home for his new family. Because of his knowledge of mechanics, he always had a neighbor's vehicle in his garage that he and his son would work on after a long day at work to provide for his family.
Samuel had a career as a chemical plant operator, mechanic, fleet manager, and retired as a hot shot delivery driver, traveling with Mary. He had a passion for hunting, fishing, motorcycles (both street and off-road), tending his horses and cattle on his family's farm in Groveton, Texas, and most importantly, spoiling his grandchildren.
Samuel was always busy in the garage, garden, or riding his tractors, and he and Mary always enjoyed trips to the casinos and cruises. Later in life, when he slowed down, he enjoyed sitting out on the porch or patio, drinking his coffee and watching his chickens, reflecting on the family and friends and the wonderful experiences he had in life.
He went by many names: Samuel, Uncle Sambo, Dad, Papa. He was a happy man that was always available for others. His smile will be missed by many. We were hoping for many more years with Papa, but "dad gummit," the good Lord needed him now.
Samuel was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary McClain; his daughter, Alice Gould; his parents, David Lee and Esther McClain; sisters, Ada Pouncy, Annie Mae Sallas, Catherine Spear, Dora Presswood, Pearl Gibson; brother, Scotty McClain, and numerous other family members.
He is survived by his son, James Carroll; granddaughter, Lori McKenna and BJ; grandson, Scott Carroll and Candy; grandson, Sam Carroll; great-grandchildren, Gilbert Ledesma II, Dylan Elasko, and Misty Rain McKenna; great-great-granddaughter, Alice Ledesma; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A graveside for Samuel will be held Saturday, April 19, 2025 from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM at Brookside Memorial Park, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039. Serving as pallbearers will be Gilbert Ledesma II, Dylan Elasko, George Elasko III, BJ McKenna, Seab Presswood, Scotty Presswood, and Chase Schubert.
Special thanks to Pastor Mark Grimes of Caney Creek Cowboy Church and everyone that has reached out with thoughts and prayers.
