Our beloved brother, Sam, passed away after a short illness. He is survived by his older brother, Scott, younger sister, Sara, nephew, Liam, and many cherished cousins and aunts and uncles. Sam shared a birthday with our loving father, William Vaughan, who preceded him in death, along with our quick-witted mother, Sarah Jean Moore.
Sam was a devoted family member, serving as one of the primary caregivers for our parents in their later years and dedicating much of his time to their well-being. He was a graduate of Memorial High School and Southwest Texas State University. Sam found joy in the outdoors, especially on the golf course in San Marcos, where he once achieved the rare feat of a hole-in-one, with friends there to witness the moment.
Weekends often found him at Lake Amistad, fishing with longtime friends James and Dean. Although he loved fishing, he insisted on releasing each catch—a reflection of his gentle spirit. Sam had a deep compassion for animals, often caring for stray cats that crossed his path, and he extended this kindness to everyone he met.
True to his character, Sam didn’t want a service or any fuss—not even an obituary, if he could help it. He was funny, a bit stubborn, and the kind of person everyone thought of as a close friend. He valued his lifelong friendships, especially with Dean, Garrett, James, and Emil. Known for his consistent habits, he was rarely seen without his baseball cap. Sam had an infectious smile and laugh and delighted in spoiling his nephew, Liam.
He spent his life caring for others and never wanted to trouble anyone with his own needs, remaining a caregiver to the end. Sam’s gentle soul will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Our family would like to thank Scott and his caregivers, Mahawa and Sockona, who quickly stepped in to support him when he needed it most, and a special thanks to our lawyer and friend Jim Hard.
