Sarah was born on the 11th day of September 1934 in Marshall, Texas, to Sarah Whaley Boone and Gordon Myles Boone. She grew up in Marshall and graduated from Marshall High School in 1952. Sarah married her high school sweetheart, Ray Ben Nesbitt, on the 29th of May 1952. They moved to College Station, where Ray graduated from Texas A&M in 1955.
After Ray graduated, they moved to Baytown with daughter Karen, aged two. In 1963 the family, which now included daughter Lynn, moved to New Canaan, Connecticut, where Ray was promoted to a position with Esso Chemical in New York, New York. The next relocation was in 1968 to Severna Park, Maryland. Joining the family in this move was youngest daughter, Laura. As Ray’s career progressed, Sarah, always the backbone of the family, orchestrated subsequent moves back to Connecticut, to Belgium, to Cleveland and finally back to Houston. Sarah approached each move as a new challenge, without complaint.
After years of relocating, Sarah and Ray built a lake house just outside of Marshall, in 1980. This home served as a strong connection to their roots in East Texas and became the center of many memorable family holidays and gatherings.
In her later years, Sarah was a tireless volunteer in support of The Women’s Home. Some of her fondest memories were of the times spent with the Craft Group and the deep friendship she shared with Barbara Allen, the former Manager of Volunteer Services at The Women’s Home.
Preceded in death by her parents and husband Ray, Sarah is survived by her daughters, Karen Marti and son-in-law Evan of Houston, Lynn Nesbitt of Houston, and Laura Mathews and son-in-law Chris of Dallas; grandchildren, Sarah Mathews of Dallas, Taylor Moffatt and wife Grayson of Houston, Samuel Hubbard of Houston, and Marissa Mathews of Dallas.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Karen Martin and the caregivers of Right At Home – Metro Houston. They treated Sarah with incredible dignity and always made the family feel like Sarah was their sole client. Houston Hospice was also invaluable in providing support to the family in Sarah’s final days.
A funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Monday, the 7th of March, at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 345 Piney Point Road in Houston, where the Rev. Stuart Bates, Rector, is to officiate.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent fellowship hall.
At a later date the family will gather for a private interment at Nesbitt Cemetery in Marshall, where the Rev. John Himes, Rector, Trinity Episcopal Church, is to officiate.
Sarah’s daughters are deeply saddened that this cruel disease left their mother unable to spend her final years traveling with friends, enjoying her grandchildren, or spending her time in support of her favorite charities. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to support medical research dedicated to Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). The website is CurePSP.org, and medical findings impact many related neurodegenerative diseases, including ALS, Huntington’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease.
