Shuey Ying Woo Joe, 100, of Houston, Texas was born on December 17, 1916 in Woo Oak Village, Hoi Ping County, Guangdong Province, China. She was the only daughter of four children born to father, Chee May Woo, and mother, Lai Seto Woo.
Shuey was 18 years old when she married Joseph Hoy Hong Joe in March 1933. Joseph was 20 years old and had already been in the United States for several years when he went back to China to marry Shuey. It was very difficult for her to immigrate to the United States during these times so she remained in China and later Hong Kong, living with and taking care of her mother-in-law, until finally being admitted into the United States in 1949.
The first grocery store that Shuey worked alongside Joseph was in Doddsville, Mississippi. They stayed in Doddsville until 1961. They moved the family, four sons and one daughter, to Houston, Texas where they owned and operated two grocery stores at different times – the first in Fifth Ward and the second one in Kashmere Gardens. They were in the grocery business for 40+ years before retiring. Shuey and Joseph were married for 71 years.
Shuey celebrated her 100 year milestone birthday on December 17, 2016, surrounded by family. She passed away peacefully on May 12, 2017.
