Our dearest father, Stephen Tak Yuen passed away in Houston, Texas on January 10, 2026 at the age of 95. He was born on October 7, 1930 and was a beloved son and the second of twelve children born to Chee-Wan Yuen and Lai-Yin Chan.
Stephen is survived by two sons Eamon (California) and John (Texas), daughters-in-law Ellen (California) and Heidi (Texas), grandchildren Courtney (California), Trevor (California) and Skylar (Texas) and surviving siblings William (California), Olive (Texas), Betty (Texas), Alfred (Texas), Patrick (New York), Lucy (Texas), and Lulu (Hong Kong).
Stephen grew up in Hong Kong, and as a young adult he developed a deep love for travel and discovery. He journeyed extensively throughout China and also visited Taiwan and Japan. His adventurous spirit eventually led him to South America, where he spent two years in Paraguay exploring opportunities in the coffee plantation business. He later settled in Argentina, successfully opening and operating an American-Chinese restaurant for several years before returning to Asia.
In 1959, Stephen returned to Hong Kong and joined the Royal Hong Kong Police as a civilian advisor. Two years later, in 1961, he took on the responsibility of managing a family-owned convenience store, a role he dedicated himself to for more than 26 years. In 1987, Stephen made another major transition in his life when he immigrated to the United States.
Stephen chose Houston, Texas as his new homebase, reuniting with several of his siblings who had already settled there. Known for his kindness and generous heart, Stephen was always eager to help others whether by offering guidance, lending a hand, or simply sharing conversation and laughter. Over time, he built a close network of friends who came to rely on and deeply appreciate his presence in their lives.
Our father was also a gifted Chinese painting artist and calligrapher. His artworks could be found displayed in many Chinese restaurants, health clinics, stores, and supermarkets throughout the southwest Houston area. Many knew him affectionately by his alias “楚留香“, inspired by the fictional protagonist from Gu Long’s Chu Liuxiang series. Like the character in the novel, Stephen admired compassion and helping those in need which was a reflection of the values he lived by every day.
He was also deeply devoted to keeping others informed, generously volunteering his time to deliver newspapers and magazines in Chinatown. Rain or shine, he carried out this task with dedication and pride to ensure that members of the southwest Houston senior community stayed current on world events and important issues. He never saw this as a chore, but as a meaningful way to serve and stay connected to the community he cared for so much.
To our father, thank you for the lessons you taught us. You will be missed dearly and will always be remembered as a man of warmth, generosity, creativity, and unwavering dedication to others. Your life was rich with stories, friendships, and countless acts of kindness. You leave behind a legacy of love and service that will continue to live on in our hearts forever.
