

Sergeant Steve Albert Perez was a man of faith who loved God, family and country. He lived the mission of a police officer: to Protect and to Serve. Sergeant Perez died in the Line of Duty on Tuesday, August 29, 2017, at the age of 60.
Sergeant Perez was born in Los Angeles, California to Ermilo J. and Veronica Barragan Perez in 1956, and grew up in San Antonio, Texas. He began his education at Catholic schools: Our Lady of the Pillar and Holy Rosary. He later attended Nimitz Middle School and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1974, where he was an award-winning Speech and Debate team member and champion Chess player. He graduated with a Political Science degree from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio in 1978, where he was an ROTC Cadet. Upon graduation, Sergeant Perez entered the Army as a Second Lieutenant. After leaving active duty, he remained an officer in the Army Reserve, where he attained the rank of Major. In 1982, Sergeant Perez joined the Houston Police Department as part of Academy Class #109.
Throughout his law enforcement career, he served in various divisions of the Houston Police Department: Special Operations, Juvenile, Patrol, Traffic Enforcement, Mobility, Mounted Patrol, and the Bicycle Division.
As a police officer, he was assigned to the Juvenile and Northwest Divisions. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1992. As a Sergeant, he was assigned to the following divisions: Emergency Communications, Northeast, Special Operations, Crime Analysis and Command Center, Vehicular Crimes, and Traffic Enforcement. Sergeant Perez loved being a police officer.

Sergeant Perez is survived by his wife of 30 years, Lupe Cheryl Perez, and his children, Maverick and Sabrina. He is also survived by his mother, Veronica Perez; sisters: Rosalinda Keegan and Wanda Perez; along with numerous extended family members and close friends.
A Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, starting at 4:15 p.m. A liturgy will follow ending at 5:30 p.m. at Saint Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, 527 South Houston Avenue, Humble, Texas 77338. A Funeral Mass will be held and celebrated downtown at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 1111 St. Joseph Parkway, Houston, Texas 77002 on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, starting at 9:30 a.m. There will be a Private Interment at his final resting place, the Houston National Cemetery.
