Susan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, with an incredibly strong faith that she shared with everyone around her. Her greatest joys were the love of her life, her husband of 60 years Lt Col Curtis Hurst, her son Dr. Eric Hurst, his beautiful wife Veronica, and her grandchildren Erika and Jonathon Hurst. The great joys were enhanced by her niece Lynette Cabrera, who was like a daughter to her. Lynette’s daughters, Gabriela and Marisa, became like grandchildren. She loved spending time with her family and growing her faith. There were many Sunday afternoons she could be heard playing her favorite hymns on the piano her grandmother Ada had bought for her with 'egg' money (Ada saved the money she made from her eggs to pay for the piano). This loving gesture is just one example of the love and kindness that Susan was raised in which she carried on with her own grandchildren. When Erika and Jonathan were young one of Susan's favorite things was spending time with them after school, preparing little snacks or treats for them to come home to after elementary school. Even as they got older she would often make little treats and put them in the fridge for them to find. Susan would get to see them several times a week and that is exactly how she wanted it, to be part of their lives. Even taking 10 year old Erika on a cruise was a dream come true; they had a beautiful time together that neither of them would ever forget and spoke of often.
A remarkably talented painter and former flower shop owner she loved to make everything around her beautiful. It was not surprising to see her making flower arrangements and/or bows for a church holiday or event. Tirelessly handling all of the flowers for her daughter in law and niece's weddings was just one example of her devotion. Her passion for painting was intense, she loved to capture a landscape in watercolor or draw a portrait. Susan had the unique ability to make anyone or anything look beautiful with just a few strokes of a pencil.
She could also be found donating time to her church, volunteering in the church nursery, cheering on her grandson Jonathon on the sidelines or taking her granddaughter Erika to ballet class. These were the things she loved the most- her family and her faith. Susan lived in a variety of places as she traveled the globe with her military husband Curtis, making lifelong friends along the way and countless memories. Her closest travel companion her son Eric there for all 13 moves, her love for Eric knew no bounds. Finally retiring in Bayou Vista, TX she continued to do the things she loved and be near those she loved the most. Even as her health began to fade her priorities and thoughts continued to be with her family, and the Astros. (She loved the Astros)
She is survived by her husband Curtis, her son Eric, daughter in law Veronica Torrez, grandchildren Erika and Jonathon, niece Lynette Cabrera, her husband Andres Cabrera, their children Gabriela and Marisa as well as many other friends and family. Susan was predeceased by her parents Esther and Perry Moore as well as her brother Duane Moore.
In lieu of flowers, you are invited to donate to a Church or charity of your choice.
