

Susan was a loving and vivacious woman who never met a stranger or anyone who was unmoved by her inner and outer beauty. Her gifts to all were her infectious happiness, the products of her outstanding culinary skills, her capacity to love and be loved and her unforgettable smile.
Susan loves her Lord and He loves her. All who know her are confident that she will be taken into His everlasting company to await the coming of her family and friends.
A graduate of The University of Texas, she was an innate social creature. Some of the many organizations in which she was active and honors which she received included Pi Phi Sorority, Junior League, River Oaks Garden Club, St. Martin’s Church Choir and Alter Guild, 50+ years with her bridge club, the founding Board of The Episcopal High School, International Association of Culinary Professionals, Past President of the Houston Culinary Guild, and was named Caterer of the Year; Houston, Texas.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Roberta Woods Ray and John Robertson Ray, Sr. She is survived by her beloved husband of thirty-nine years, Jack H. Mayfield, Jr.; son, Thomas Graydon Dunlap and spouse Darren; daughters, Nancy Dunlap Finan, Ellen Dunlap Ohmstede and spouse Will, Joan Dunlap Filippone and spouse Jude; step-children, Lydia Mayfield Abbott and spouse William, Jack H. Mayfield III and spouse Denis, Walter G. Mayfield and spouse Sheila; siblings, John R. Ray, Jr. and spouse Elizabeth, and James R. Ray and spouse Tina; grandchildren, Ginny Filippone and Sarah Dunlap, Taylor Gilliam, Carter Gilliam, Kristi Abbott, Steven Abbott, James Walter Davis Mayfield, Jack H. Mayfield, IV, Walter G. Mayfield, Jr., and Michael T. Mayfield.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 26th of May, in the parlor and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The memorial service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 27th of May, at St Martin’s Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road, where The Rev. Dr. Russell J. Levenson, Jr., Rector, is to officiate.
Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery.
