Thomas was born in Xenia, Ohio, on May 10, 1957 to Lemuel and Mary Menear, on Mother's Day weekend. He was an ornery toddler, driving his mother crazy. He followed his family to California, back to Ohio, and then to Houston, Texas. His elementary years were filled with the freedom of the '60s... riding his bike, playing with the neighborhood kids. He played trumpet in the Houston Youth Orchestra.
Moving then to Portland, he graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Economics. While in the northwest, he and his sister, Terri (now deceased), spent many holidays together. He assisted her while she fought her initial stages of cancer until she had to return to Texas to live with her parents until her death. Terri's death was a deep loss for him.
Living in Seattle, he worked in various banks, enjoyed the weather and culture, and served as a guide for family who visited him there.
He returned to Texas when his father had open-heart surgery. Seeing his parents' needs, he dedicated himself to their comfort and care. He tried holding down jobs, but his parents came first. He patiently and lovingly cared for them until their deaths. It was a grueling time for him as it is for many caregivers.
Thom could talk to anyone about anything. He read constantly and was so well-informed. He filled his life with books and music. He was witty, funny and loved his family who loved him deeply.
He is survived by two sisters, Joyce and Linda; 3 nephews, 1 niece and many cousins.
