
Thomas Hugh Yelverton, age 78, died on April 30, 2026, in Houston, Texas. "Tom" was born in Brownsville, Texas, on January 8, 1948, the son of Thomas E. and Margaret Yelverton. He is predeceased by his parents, his sister Carolou Ward, and his brothers Andrew and Mark Yelverton.
Before he was one year of age, Tom's family moved to Houston, where he grew up and graduated from Waltrip High School in 1966. Tom entered the United States Army in 1968 and served as a combat infantryman in Viet Nam. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his service. Tom returned to his education after his service and attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied business and transportation. Tom spent his career working in the transportation industry. He co-owned MAK Transportation, an intermodal transportation company.
Tom's lifelong passion was for automobiles. He spent many years as an active member of the Gulf Coast Chapter of the Oldsmobile Club of America. He enjoyed his friends in the organization, participating in car shows, and working for many years at the Houston Autorama. Tom enjoyed his morning walks, riding, working on his bicycle, and spending time with his many friends and neighbors. Tom will be remembered by his friends and family for his quick wit, his eagerness to be of help, and his genuine interest in everyone he knew and everyone he met. Tom was a member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church.
Tom is survived by Mary Allen Yelverton, his wife of 52 years; daughter Stephanie Cantrell and son Stephen Yelverton. He is also survived by grandchildren; Erin Baughman, Courtney Belew, Brandon Cantrell, great -grandchildren; Marley Seal, Cage Cantrell and Sonnet Cantrell and nieces Jennifer Brenner, Sara Yelverton-Rustrian, and Tammy Yelverton; and nephews Grant Yelverton and Blaine Yelverton.
A Celebration of Tom's Life will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer Rd, Houston, Texas, 77077
A reception will follow the Celebration of Life at the same location.
