Born August 3, 1966 to A.C. and Dorothy Mae Thompson. At an early age Tommy lost his mother and was brought to Houston where he was reared by his mother’s twin sister Doris Washington along with her family and his cousins (James Jr, Connie, Ronnie and Helen) who became his brothers and sisters in addition to his biological siblings.
Tommy was baptized under the leadership of H.E. Potts at Grace Temple Missionary Baptist Church, where he was active in the youth choir. He enjoyed singing along with other youth activities.
He received his formal education attending Houston Independent School District. From Burrus Elementary, Black Middle, and finally Booker T. Washington High School. He would continue his learning by pursuing an associates degree in Business Management from Houston Community College. For the next 25 years, he worked in Restaurant Management.
An avid sports fan, he loved playing tennis, basketball and watching his favorite games shows and sci-fi movies. A math wizard, he would collect and buy model cars and calculate measurements. Playing cards and dominoes afforded him the numbers game as well.
Those who knew Tommy knew he was quiet, soft spoken, funny yet very observant and quick tempered. To find him tapping his feet to the soulful sounds of Sam Cook and Al Green was not unusual when relaxing on the beach or sitting in his thinking chair.
In the Summer of 1988, while working at James Coney Island he crossed paths with Ruthie Fletcher. He was eventually successful with his patient, long courtship of Ruthie and on April 8, 2007 he married the Love of his Life. Of the many things they would do, they enjoyed traveling together to many places including Colorado, Florida, Southern California, Louisiana, Nevada, Mississippi, and Hawaii. His favorite place was Hawaii. He loved the serenity and peace of the ocean waters until his health prevented him from traveling as much as he liked.
Tommy was called home on August 8, 2021. He is survived by a loving and devoted wife Ruthie N. Thompson, his daughter Jayneisha Lawrence, his son Tommy L. Thompson, 2 grandchildren. His brothers Mark (Lavelle), and Gregory (CeCe) Thompson his cousins, Connie Washington, Ronnie Washington, and Helen Washigtion-Mitchell (Anthony).
