T. Lloyd Canterbury, Jr., 67, passed away on November 12, 2015 after drowning in Galveston, TX. He passed away doing one of the things he enjoyed most; fishing with a friend. Lloyd’s heroic attempts to save his friend came as no surprise to those who knew and loved him. “He’d have done it for a stranger,” was said often.
Lloyd was born in Shreveport, LA on February 28, 1948 to Trenton Lloyd Canterbury, Sr. and Claudia Helen Stewart. The third of twelve children and the first son, he was the brother all his siblings looked up to and admired.
Lloyd had an infectious laugh and impeccable character. He was the pure example of how a man should be in life, for his family, and at work or play. He was a true Renaissance Man. There was nothing he couldn’t build or fix. He loved to paint landscapes and grow vegetables in his garden. If you lost him in a group of people, he was probably off taking pictures of the flowers. His stories consisted mostly of hunting and fishing with family and friends.
Lloyd served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam for the 125th Air Transportation Corp as an Air Traffic Controller. He returned after 12 months in Vietnam and married his sweetheart, Veronique, on January 16, 1970. The couple finished out Lloyd’s military career at Ft. Rucker, AL before returning home to Haughton, LA.
Lloyd and Veronique had twin boys in 1972 and a third son in 1981. They moved to Houston, TX shortly after the twins were born to work for his brother-in-law. Expecting only to stay in Houston for a short time, the couple surprisingly never returned to Louisiana. Lloyd worked most of his life in construction before getting a job with the Houston City Water Department; where he retired recently after 10 years. He was always the hardest worker on the job and the guy everyone trusted to do it right the first time.
As a Papaw, Lloyd was all the kids’ favorite. They gravitated toward him from infancy and each one was convinced they were Papaw’s favorite. In truth, they are all his favorites! He would hold them for as long as they wanted, sometimes two at a time. Papaw made sure they all had gum in Church, even when Mom said no. Lloyd took his grandchildren hunting and fishing and made sure they each had special things made by him.
Lloyd converted to Catholicism on March 30, 2002 after several years of attending mass with his family. His faith remained strong and he and his wife were active in the church.
Lloyd, Jr. is survived by his wife, Veronique; his sons: Trenton, Travis, and Aaron; his “daughters”: Felicia and Jori; his grandchildren: Mercedes, Joshua, Dawn, Noelle, and Adrian; his sisters: Bertie Rose Lance, Ann “Pat” Dowden, Claudia “Sissy” Bertrand, Cheryl Johnson, Tammy Martwick, Annette Keith, Sandra Hook, and Kim Berry; his brothers: Stewart, Kevin, and Shane; and many nieces and nephews.
Lloyd, Jr. was preceded in death by his father, Trenton Lloyd Canterbury, Sr.; his mother, Claudia Helen Canterbury; and his sister, Ginger Wynn.
Lloyd will be buried with full military honors at Houston National Cemetery on November 20th at 9:45 am. Mass will be given at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church on November 20th at 8:00am. The viewing will be at American Heritage Funeral Home on November 19th from 5:00-8:00 pm with the Rosary at 7:00 pm.
Lloyd, Jr. will be missed beyond measure.
