Virginia “Birdie” Lee (Abbey) Bielamowicz, 84, left peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on March 5, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Margaret Abbey, sisters Betty, Alice, Maybell, and Sue, brothers, Harold Jr. and Chester, son Harold Wayne and son-in-law, Ben Matula, Jr. She is survived by her loving husband, Robert Bielamowicz, Sr., daughter Frances Matula, sons Robert Bielamowicz, Jr. (Louise) and Norman Bielamowicz (Rhonda), 8 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren.
Born in Houston on July 18, 1940, Virginia was the sixth of seven children. She often spoke of the devastating loss of her father when she was just 15 years old which was life changing. As she has done throughout her entire life, she stepped up to help support her family by waiting tables at the Rice Hotel. In her free time, she had a passion for ice skating and dancing. It was not too long before she locked eyes with a young man curiously driving down Lockwood Drive and knew that was the one. Robert and Virginia married on August 23,1958, and welcomed four children with whom they shared many adventures with. Frequenting Galveston Beach for day trips or overnight camping trips were so many treasured family memories were made. The family built a lovely home on Dewville Lane in 1966 and never could have dreamed they would also build lifelong relationships with their neighbors who became family over the years and still remain close to this day. Birdie was an advocate in the community, keeping a watchful eye, befriending and cooking for local law enforcement to make certain her family and friends remained in the safest neighborhood in the city. She frequented the FFA barn, school sporting events and the Special Olympics to support her children.
Later in life, she cared for both her mother-in-law and even worked in the local nursing home so she could care for her mother. Virginia was overjoyed when she became a grandmother and then great-grandmother. She exuded so much love and energy to make sure her babies had a good time and were spoiled as much as possible.
Birdie will forever be remembered for her love of family and friends. She worked selflessly to make sure everyone was taken care of and well-fed. We can all be assured she has made her way into her heavenly home with restored energy and love to share for all those who have preceded her.
