Mrs. Virginia May Blume, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend passed away peacefully on November 15, 2023. Born in Linton, Indiana, on May 3, 1928, Virginia met the love of her life, Lowell Blume, at the young age of 16. Married in 1945, Virginia and Lowell moved from small town Indiana and eventually landed in the big city, Houston, Texas.
Endearingly known to many as “Biddie,” she epitomized strength and kindness, possessing an eternally optimistic soul that never seemed to fade despite the years that passed. A vibrant woman well before her time, Biddie owned her own business and loved to travel, visiting exciting locales such as Panama, Germany, Brazil, and Peru. Whether it was working at Tennis Express or walking the halls of Treemont, she never met a stranger but instead drew people in with her warmth, smile, and sharp sense of humor. All were welcome in her home for a holiday or family meal, although you assumed the risk that consuming any “freshly” prepared dish likely contained pantry staples that pushed the limits of expiration dates (and often well beyond). But maybe that was a reflection of Biddie herself—a woman who wasn’t fazed by time or age, exuding a zest for life that would put most 20 somethings to shame. That vivacity was no better exemplified than on her 85thbirthday when she ripped a shot of tequila with ease and threw her hands up in exuberant celebration. Safe to say, she was a woman who will not soon be forgotten.
But perhaps most admirable, Biddie was fiercely loyal and always put her family first. Even in the waning moments of her life, it was everyone else she showed concern for, ignoring her own needs for the benefit of others. This altruism will be the enduring legacy of Virginia May Blume, someone who recognized the value in putting others first, expecting nothing in return. Biddie was love at its finest.
Virginia is survived by her son Jeffery Blume, four grandchildren: Jennifer Blume, Christopher Blume, Caroline McMillin and Connor Blume and four great grandchildren: Joaquin Matienzo, Claudia Blume, Cameron Blume and Nolan McMillin. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Lowell Robert Blume, her son Gary Blume, daughter in law, Gloria Ann “Sue” Blume, her parents, Ralph and Geneva May, and her sister Betty White.
A memorial service for Biddie will be held Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079.
