Walter was born in Hill County, Texas , on June 17, 1935, to Homer and Marie Green. He was one of four sons.
He attended school in Birome and Penelope, graduating as Valedictorian of his high school class.
In addition to earning both B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering at Texas Tech, Walter served in the U.S. Army. Most of his service was in Hawaii-both the Big Island and at Scofield Barracks in Oahu.
While at Texas Tech, Walter married Sandra Carroll, of Tyler. The couple moved to Houston in the summer of 1960 to begin Walter’s new job with Texaco.
Several years later, Walter accepted an invitation to join Gulf Interstate Engineering company, where he remained until his retirement. For him, the highlight of that period was his assignment in Alaska and involvement in the design and construction of the Trans-Alaska pipeline.
Walter is pre-deceased by his parents and brothers, and is survived by his wife Sandy, son Jon and his wife Alma, and his granddaughter Melannie.
