Wanda was born in Tyler, Texas on August 12, 1939, as an only child to Edward Alvin Wendlandt and Charlotte Ann Wilkinson. She attended Lamar High School in Houston, Texas, and later went on to The University of Texas in Austin, just like her dad. There, she met John King, a band major, whom she married and had 3 children; Karen, Robert, and Carl. Together, they opened up “Children’s World” in Town & Country in the early 70’s. Later they would open a second store in The Houston Galleria and were open until the late 80’s. She was a long-time resident in the Memorial area of Houston.
Wanda had always admired art, and so then decided to pursue her passion and go travelling through Europe to find and collect beautiful art pieces. She started “European Art Importers” and opened “The Art Gallery at Wimberly”, in Wimberly, Texas. A nice little place where people would come in and buy her treasured pieces. Through the years, she also contracted and showcased several known Texas artists, such as, George Kovach, A.D. Greer, Manuel Garza, and many more.
Wanda was a wonderful woman, quiet at times but full of wit and wisdom. She enjoyed reading, antique shopping, music, travelling, she loved animals, good food, and back country roads. She was loving and caring with all her family and also with strangers. She was a member Daughters of the American Revolution of the Tyler chapter, and also supported many philanthropies throughout her life.
We will miss your love, your kindness, your dump cake, and those looks you gave us at times, but we know you are in heaven with Ryan and Hayley and surrounded by all those who love you too.
She is survived by her daughter Karen and husband Dale McGuinn of Houston, Texas, sons; Robert King and wife Anita of Katy and Carl King of The Woodlands, Texas, and her grandchildren; Catherine King Patel and husband Saurabh Patel, Christina and husband Martin King Dolan, Karli King, Zander King, and her great grand-daughter, Claire King Dolan.
She is proceeded in death by her grandson Ryan Robinson and granddaughter Hayley Robinson and her longtime companion Jack Franklin.
