March 26, 1949 – November 20, 2025
Wayne Jaterka, born March 26, 1949, in Raton, New Mexico, passed away on November 20, 2025, in Katy, Texas, at the age of 76. A true outdoorsman, Wayne found his greatest joy in wide-open spaces, crisp mountain air, and any chance to be outside—whether camping, four-wheeling, hunting, or fishing. He was a fiercely loyal fan of the Denver Broncos and the Houston Texans. He loved college sports, especially the University of Wyoming Cowboys, cheering on their football and basketball teams with unwavering devotion.
On June 9, 1973, Wayne married the love of his life, Judy. Together, they built a life marked by love, grit, and adventure, raising their daughters in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Wayne served as a dedicated Greyhound driver, retiring after nearly 30 years, having traveled countless miles and truly never meeting a stranger. In 2012, Wayne and Judy moved to Katy, Texas, where they continued their journey side by side, supported by their daughter Stephanie and son-in-law Steven.
To his four grandchildren—Braeden, Madalynn, Grayson, and Kinsley—Wayne was larger than life. His granddaughters lovingly called him “Grumpy,” a nickname he embraced with pride and a playful spark. His grandsons saw him as the seasoned outdoorsman who would tinker and attempt to fix anything. He worked hard to pass along his love of nature to each of them.
Wayne was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judy; his parents; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is survived by his daughters, Lori (Paul Davis) of Cheyenne, WY, and Stephanie (Steven Vaughan) of Brookshire, TX; and by his cherished grandchildren, Braeden (Angela) and Madalynn Davis of Cheyenne, WY, and Grayson and Kinsley Vaughan of Brookshire, TX.
He leaves behind a lifetime of stories, a legacy of strength and humor, and a family who will forever treasure the man they called husband, Dad, Grumpy, and friend.
