My wife and I lived together with Yi’s wife for one and half years back in the graduate school.  We got to know Yi when they two were dating.  

From day one, I found Yi was such simple , honest and trusted person.  No flattery, no much talking, while he cared each person around him in such a true and simple way.

When I visited them around 2010,  Yi took me to watch 龙舟比赛。we had such a great time together.  

Yi loved his family to the last minute of his life.  He fought with cancer during last 9 years and tried his best to be there to support his sons to college and graduation! What a perseverance and love! 

Yi, your life encourages each of us to live a simple way and be true to everyone and give  the best to people around us.

In the past few years, I was fortunate to work closely with Yi on several technical projects, and I always valued his expertise, his strong engineering intuition, and his calm and friendly nature.  I greatly appreciated his mentorship, and I will remember my interactions with him fondly.

With profound sorrow and gratitude, I reflect on the life of Yi, a classmate whose gentle spirit and unwavering kindness touched us all. I still recall his very first day at Notre Dame—the tall, slender figure who entered with a smile brightening the gloomiest corners of our dark graduate office. Yi’s quiet strength and compassion were instantly felt, and he wove himself into the fabric of our lives.
From the outset, with Le and Raeann by our side, we formed a bond that transcended friendship. It was a kinship—rooted in our shared beginnings at Peking University and blossoming amid new adventures at Notre Dame.
Yi was truly the heart of our community. His devotion to the Chinese Student Society, particularly as president of CSSA, showed just how much he cared for those around him. Pickup, Shopping, car accident, legal assistance…life was so challenging for the new life of a poor foreign student. Even amid the whirlwind of a demanding academic program and a strict professor, Yi never lost hope or his trademark resilience. He was generous, cheered others on, listened to every worry, and—if you caught him at the right moment—share a quip that made everyone laugh. (If you’ve ever tried his buffalo wings, you know he also believed that food was a love language.)
Being his friend was a true privilege, and his example continues to inspire all who knew him. Yi’s legacy endures in the community he fostered and in the stories we cherish.
To Yi’s family, please accept my heartfelt condolences. I hope you find comfort in knowing how deeply Yi was loved and respected. Thank you for sharing him with us—his kindness and laughter will remain a guiding light in our lives.
Thank you, Yi, for your friendship, humor, and generosity. We acknowledge your life, marked by compassion, resilience, and joy. You will be dearly missed, and your memory will continue to influence us. Rest in peace, Yi.

Yi was one of the smartest people I have ever met.  Although I did not meet him at Peking University, which we both attended, I got to know him well at Notre Name.  He was usually quiet but quick and firm in making decisions.  He was a gentle soul.  We kept in touch for the first few years after leaving ND and talked about how to succeed in our respective careers.  We gradually lost touch as he moved south and I moved north to Minnesota.  He always wore a smile when he talked.  He will be missed.  Yi will live on in our hearts, forever!  May he rest in peace.  My condolences to Le, Brendan and Kevin.

Above all, Yi loved his family. He endured years of pain and suffering with remarkable courage, all so he could be there for his children—to raise them, support them, and send them off to college and into their futures. His devotion as a father is an inspiration that will continue to guide his children and his wife.

Yi, although you have left this world, you will forever remain part of our lives. May peace be with you, and with your beloved family.

Yi was a simple and humble man. In my memory, he never complained about what to eat or wear. He lived down-to-earth, grateful for what he had.

What always struck me most was his inner strength. Even during his illness, he never allowed it to change his lifestyle or his work ethic. He continued working full-time and even attending conferences until the very last stage

Yi was a great colleague to have around- he had the fine balance between an engineer and scientist and was always willing to share his knowledge without expecting any credit. He was very easy to work with and would always ask how my family was doing before we started any technical discussion. I will miss having technical discussions with him.

我和叶弋是北大力学系同学，那四年期间我们其实并不很熟。叶弋来自苏州，那里才子辈出,他无疑是其中之一。叶弋学习成绩出色，刚进大学英语分班就进了最高的三级班。至今我还清楚记得那时叶弋瘦瘦高高的身影，背着一个大书包，晚自习回来，微仰着头，不紧不慢，笑着走在34楼的楼道里，意气奋发。毕业后，我们先后到了美国，我到Delaware的时候，叶弋已经在Notre Dame了。有一天，他给我发了一句没头没脑的消息，说他的一个同学要来Delaware，然后就没有了。开学没多久，在校车上一个高高的漂亮女生主动跟我打招呼，问我是否叶弋的大学同学。她就是潘乐。我比较迟钝，开始并不知道他们的关系，便随口八卦了几句叶弋同学的轶事，随后发现潘乐惊异的表情，这才感觉他们关系不一般，自己说话太随便，幸好没有造成什么严重后果。后来没过多久，叶弋来看潘乐，他胖得我差点没认出来，据他说是因为每天早上要吃四个Donuts。我们仨一起去了Baltimore Inner Harbor，照片里的我们对未来充满了希望。再后来的一天，潘乐告诉我说她和叶弋结婚了，虽然又加了一句“吵架吵烦了”，却丝毫掩饰不住她开心的表情。那时的我居然连贺礼都没想到要送一份。过了半年，我离开了Delaware，和叶弋的联络也慢慢多了一些。毕业后叶弋和潘乐去了Texas，我们到了Boston。叶弋很热心，他往往是那个主动联系我们和其他同学的人，他就像一个同学信息枢纽，把大家连接到了一起。叶弋应该是一个很顾家的人，记忆中他曾经告诉我有段时间因为工作原因，每天要开车100迈单程去上班，还出了车祸，他却没有丝毫抱怨。他给我们打电话时间不定，有时在他接送孩子活动的间隙，有时是在出差候机的空挡。他是个热爱生活的人，电话里慢条斯理，我们聊工作，孩子，同学，旅游，日常等等，他呵呵的笑声经常感染到我们。大约十多年前，叶弋全家开车经过Boston，在我们家住了一晚。叶弋的两个儿子Brandan，Kelvin和我们家Dustin前后各差一岁，很快他们仨就玩到了一起。叶弋虽然旅途劳累，依然快乐健谈。叶弋得病的消息是薛宇红告诉我们的，我们都很震惊和难过，可叶弋在电话里很豁达和乐观，他的积极态度深深感动和鼓舞了我们。在漫长的治疗期间，叶弋和他家人的付出我们很难想象，他的坚韧毅力和乐观态度超越我们常人。许多年以后，我们依然会记得那个呵呵笑着的，给我们留下美好回忆的叶弋同学。

Although I did not know Yi and Le while they attended Notre Dame, ironically we were all there at the same time back in the 90s. Luckily, as fate would have it, our paths finally crossed in 1998 down in The Woodlands, TX when I met Le at work at the former Hewitt Associates. I am so very grateful for those years we spent working together and our friendship that has endured even through my move to the east coast.  Le and I carpooled to work for quite some time, which means I heard a ton of Yi stories ;) I finally met Yi and it was clear that he had traits that I already admired in Le - kind, humble, hard-working, and of course incredibly brilliant. These traits, as well as Yi’s quiet strength, helped him fight his battle with cancer with so much courage and bravery.

In another twist of fate, both of our kids were also at Notre Dame at the same time. I was so blessed to have gotten to know Brendan when we were back on campus for football games. I see the same character traits in Brendan and it is easy to see how proud he has made his parents. While I haven’t met Kevin yet, I know that he also continues the legacy that Yi and Le started (hello Stanford?!!).

Le, Brendan, and Kevin, please know that we are lifting you all up in our prayers. May you be surrounded by God’s love, comfort and gentle care now and always.

Two years ago on Thanksgiving, Yi and his wife braved the cold winds with us to watch Notre Dame play an away game against Stanford University. As fellow Notre Dame alumni and fans, that game marked our only reunion since graduation — a moment of great significance that we will always treasure.

Although I am older than Yi, it was he who inspired me almost every day with his intelligence, kindness, loyalty, courage, and leadership. We were roommates for two and a half years and became lifelong friends. It was Yi who introduced me to the promise of the World Wide Web, explained the tactics of football games, and generously shared his home-cooked Chinese dishes (his salty chicken wings was my favorite). For one semester, we ate mostly at the student dining hall—partly because I was too busy, or perhaps too lazy, to cook. That too became part of the fun. We often had long lunches together, so full that we skipped dinner. Another source of laughter was the candid remarks we shared about the girls we met or dated. In the end, we both married the wonderful women we first met at Notre Dame.

When my old Toyota Celica finally broke down, we got around in his almost “new” Corolla—one of the few things he ever bought just for himself. After Notre Dame, we kept in touch through the years, and the last time we met was in Houston in 2023. Despite his long battle with cancer, the same witty, slightly shy smile was still on his face.

八八力學葉弋同學於2025八月二十五日英年早逝。有幸和葉弋大學四載同窗，他個子高挑，上學時喜歡穿一身白色運動衣，總喜歡謙和地微笑，一位來自江南的謙謙君子、陽光少年。葉弋入學後成了我們班的學習委員，同學們的回憶文字裏提及了他的聰慧好學。以下是關於葉弋的兩個回憶。

記得剛剛入學的一個週末，我離開校園獨自去北京城裏閑逛，回來時下公交車，有些迷路了。抬眼驀然看見博雅塔，順著塔的導引，從東門回到了的燕園。看到一池未名湖水，勞累的身心一下安靜下來，彷彿回家一般。在俄文樓，遇到了葉弋，他手裏拿著一份北京地圖，也是剛剛從外面回來，按圖索驥。身上帶著和未名湖水一樣寧靜的氣質。

臨畢業時，我和葉弋一起去了一趟頤和園。記得那是個午後，園中遊客不多，我們在一個亭子中，一邊用帶來的麵包餵鳥，一邊聊著天。旁邊是昆明湖波光粼粼，遠處西山如黛……

三十多年前的兩個小插曲，兩池安靜湖水，吻合了葉弋的性格。如今也希望離去的葉弋和當年一樣，拿著地圖，找到了自己靈魂的家園。

I had such an honor to get chance to meet Yi as friend, coworker and mentor . 
He always had answers for any question I asked him about ECP polymers . He is so smart but  humble. I will always remember his kindness and smiles.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my dear friend and classmate, Ye Yi.

    We were roommates throughout our four years of college, and during that time we shared countless wonderful moments—from walking to class, studying in the library, and eating in the cafeteria, to going on hikes at the weekend.

    In my eyes, Yi was a remarkably bright person. He grasped complex scientific and engineering concepts with effortless ease, yet he remained incredibly humble. He was consistently kind to everyone and maintained a calm demeanor in all situations.

    Yi was the most pure-hearted person I have ever known. He never chased money or fame, but instead remained genuinely kind and devoted to his family, friends, and all those around him. I was always inspired by his calmness and courage, especially in the face of difficulties and illness.

2023 年感恩节给姐姐一家拍下这张照片。姐姐姐夫都很优秀，两个孩子也教育的很好，是令人羡慕的一家。姐姐姐夫一家带孩子们来多伦多家里玩儿，四个孩子追逐打闹好像就在昨天。姐夫生病后乐观积极地治疗，姐姐不离不弃悉心陪伴照料了9年。如今孩子们都长大成人，愿天堂没有病痛🙏，我们一家永远怀念姐夫🙏。

叶弋是我们在2006年搬到Woodlands后认识的第一位华人。我先生在Walgreen取药，正好碰到了叶弋，也是从那一刻起开始了我们两家一辈子的缘分。孩子们在一起练琴，一起上中文课，一起参加活动，一起长大；老人们在一起照顾孙子们，一起散步、聊天，一起参加各种各样的在林城能找的适合老人和孩子们的活动；我先生和我和叶弋潘乐夫妇也陪伴着老人和孩子，和他们一样成为了不是家人却胜似家人的一辈子的朋友。

叶弋本科毕业于北京大学，硕士研究生毕业于CMU，博士毕业于 Norte Dame。他把毕生所学都献给了他热爱的事业。每次去他家，他永远坐在桌子前他的椅子里面，认真的钻研业务。他的敬业和他的亲和得到了公司领导和员工极大的信任和尊敬。做为朋友，他永远为别人考虑，把别人的利益放在自己前面。于人为善，在康复医院的时候，经常把自己的食物分给其他的病人。叶弋有着一颗最善良的心。

叶弋对自已的家人有着最深沉的爱。他对他的母亲给予了无为不至的关怀。大家一起出去吃饭，总能看到他周到的细心的让老人得到照顾。他的母亲对他这个孝顺的儿子充满了自豪。

做为丈夫和父亲，叶弋把毕生的爱都给了潘乐和两个孩子。他是潘乐最忠诚的最体贴的伴侣，是Brenden and Kevin 最耐心的守护者、最坚强的后盾。他如山的父爱造就了两个最出色的最懂事的儿子。

在叶弋最后的日子里，潘乐和两个孩子吃住在病房里，寸步不离。真正看到他们对叶弋的不舍，也深切感觉到了叶弋对家人的不舍。这两种不舍都让人看了心碎。叶弋英年早逝，何其不幸；却又何其有幸，有潘乐这样的贤妻九年相伴病榻不离不弃，尝试了所有的人力能所极的治疗办法；有Brenden和Kevin这样的从需要父母照顾的少年成长为顶天立地的为母解忧的男子汉，成长为在父亲病床前衣不解带的悉心照顾虔诚祈祷的孝顺儿子。是啊，叶弋，你又何其有幸。

我和叶弋大学三四年之后才熟起来的。那时候我们都在准备出国的那些考试。我记得我跟他说我觉的专科的GRE太难了，我不考了。审请个差不多的学校也够了。 他却轻轻松松地考了个高分。我那时候就开佩服他的聪明。后来我们都到了美国。他电话里告诉我他一学期选了五门数学系的课准备一年就完成CMU硕士。－年之后他果然又轻松地做到了。

几年之后我们都毕业了。叶弋告诉我他也要来休斯顿附近上班。我高兴极了，期待着多年以后的重逢。当我打开房门见到叶弋的那一刻，我们俩都吃了一惊。我们都比上学时胖了好多。后来他告诉我得在印象中的人周围再添好几圈才能认出来。 那天叶弋，我和我太太去了独一处吃了烤鸭，享受着久别重逢的开心。

叶弋的太太也来到了德州。我和我太太我们四个人一起去新奥尔良玩。那时我们都是二十多岁。还没孩子。对未来充满信心。

后来我们都有了孩子 也搬了好几次家。我记得我们去过叶弋在orange的家，在woodlands的家，和在北京的家。叶弋也来过我们在休斯顿，达拉斯，和现在新泽西州的家。他跟两个儿子还去过我父母在北京的家。这么多年我们彼此见证了对方的生活成长。每年过节都会接到叶弋的电话。我们分享生活点滴孩子们的趣事。病魔没有改变叶弋。他依旧是那么开朗。好像一切都不是事儿。

亲爱的朋友，我永远怀念你！

四年前叶弋和我聊天，告诉我他刚参加完老大的高中毕业典礼，希望也能参加老二的毕业典礼。那时我才知道他得了肺癌。
现如今俩个孩子都如此优异，我相信叶弋的心愿可以说是超额实现了吧。

Dear Le, Breandan, Kevin, and Mom Jimei,

I am deeply saddened to learn of Yi’s passing. I was his college classmate at Peking University, and I will always remember him as a kind, humble, and intelligent person and friend.

When I first came to the U.S. in 2000, Yi would call me every other week. He had arrived here several years earlier, and during those first months on campus, he was essentially the only person I spoke to regularly besides my family in China. That was simply who Yi was—he cared deeply about others and made sure they felt supported.

In 2021, during a family trip to Austin, I reached out to see if we could meet. I suggested visiting him in Houston or meeting halfway, but instead, Yi and his wife drove three hours to Austin to see us. He said, “You have your children with you, so it’s easier if I come.” At that time, he was already ill. Yet, true to his nature, he put others first and never hesitated to extend his kindness.

This morning, I ran a 10-mile race in his memory. Many moments and conversations with Yi came flooding back to me during that run. I will miss him dearly, but his warmth, generosity, and friendship will live on in my heart.

May God’s love bring comfort and strength to your family during this difficult time.

叶弋和我既是大学的校友，更是研究生时的好友。他是88力学系的，应该算是我的师兄，但是在我第一次进入CMU研究生办公室的时候，就看到了这位跟我同期入学的师兄的高大背影:那会儿他正在拿着课表选课，看见我就笑呵呵的给我介绍那些老师们。我很惊讶同样是刚入学的他，对于教授们的情况了如指掌，甚至不输于已经在CMU学习多年的其他师兄们，相比之下我糊里糊涂，完全没有准备。随后的日子里，一直都是这样，他和其他师兄们像大哥一样在各方面都尽量照顾我，帮助我，而我那时候也乐得倚小卖小，耍赖取宠:打麻将的时候跟他瞎胡闹，或是不做作业要抄他的……

谁知一转眼我们就都已经是年过半百，身体发福，眼睛发花的老头子了。去年秋天，他在微信上呼我，这是我们二十多年以来第一次联系。技术的进步让我们不仅可以闻声，还可以见面。在视频里面，他的精神比预计的要好的多，当时我们还计划什么时候召集老哥哥们聚聚，说是地点就现在德州云云。那时候我急着去广州跟家人汇合，就把这事先放下了。后来一直心心念念的想什么时候约起众人，但总借口来日方长，可就这么拖得一拖，竟然已是天人永隔。

人生一世，可谓匆匆。手足知己，能有几人？与君有缘，同窗青春。感君厚谊，待我情深。今君永离，不忍言悲，愿君英魂，安宁恒真。

I am very sad to hear this.. Ye and I worked together at DuPont for several years. Ye was a very kind person and very highly intelligent. It was always a pleasure to work and talk with Ye.
