Your memory is a keepsake from which we’ll never part.
God has you in His keeping; we have you in our hearts.
Adice Libby Schuchterman of Modesto, California, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026, of natural causes. She was 103 years old.
Adice was born on August 7, 1922, in Rome, Pennsylvania, to Rollin and Gwennie Taylor. She was raised on a farm alongside her sisters, Gladys and Phyllis, and her brother, Harold. There, the family raised animals and crops—including maple syrup, which they sold within the community—learning the values of hard work and self-reliance.
She attended Rome schools through high school, graduating as valedictorian of her class, and went on to study Home Economics at Penn State University. After graduating in 1944, Adice and her best friend Miriam boarded a train bound for California, where they became government food inspectors. It was while working as a home economist and food inspector that she met her future husband, Henry Schuchterman.
Together, Adice and Henry owned and managed several farms and raised six children: Karen, Linda, Connie, Anita, Henry, and Sandra. Their daughter Connie passed away at six months of age. Later, the family moved into town, and Adice began a new chapter as an elementary school teacher for Modesto City Schools.
In retirement, Adice loved traveling, gardening, volunteering with the Escalon Historical Society, and participating in church activities. She was a member of Geneva Presbyterian Church.
Adice was the passionate matriarch of her family, always looking forward to the next milestone. She recently delighted in welcoming twin great-grandsons, Ryan and Max, new brothers of great-granddaughter Penelope. She marveled at the boundless energy of her nearby great-grandson Dempsey, and cherished Sunday FaceTime calls with her great-granddaughter Tayla. She enjoyed visits with great-grandson Bryan.
She took life in stride, witnessing extraordinary world changes—from her family’s first Ford Model T to owning her own computer and engaging on social media. Adice was kind, opinionated, tough, resilient, and humble. She was our north star.
Well done, good and faithful servant. Rest now. Rest in peace.
Adice is survived by children Karen (Gary) Balmain, Linda (Doug) Johnson, Anita Clements, Henry (Marie) Schuchterman, and Sandra Crough; grandchildren Jason Marrs, David (Sam) Seay, Nichole (Jonny) Kelly, Chelsey Schuchterman, Sean Henrie, Connie (Mason) Morel, Blake (Sam) Crough, and Christine (Dante) Podesto; and 6 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, her daughter Connie, her granddaughter Arika, and son in law Eric.
Services will be held on February 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, California
