Bluford Leroy “Roy” Hicks passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on September 24, 2025. He was born on June 1, 1936, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the only child of Martha Hudson and Bluford C. Hicks.
He was affectionately known to many as “Roy.” While serving in the U.S. Air Force, his fellow servicemen would joke, “There goes that Blue Ford!”—a play on his name. Not particularly amused, he decided “Roy” suited him much better, and the name stayed with him ever since.
Roy was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 61 years, Nancy Lee Hicks (2022); his mother, Martha Hicks-Hinds (2007); and his father, Bluford C. Hicks (1966).
He is survived by his children, Mary Hicks Alvarez (Linden) and Roy Allen Hicks (Modesto); and his cherished grandchildren, Madalyn and Damien Alvarez, Jr.
Roy always had a smile on his face and greeted everyone with a friendly hello or a small wave. He was known for his generosity and kindness—always ready to lend a hand or offer help when needed. He worked for United Airlines as a Lead Mechanic until he left to care for his mother. Roy also shared his passion for aviation as a flight instructor for small private planes.
In his spare time, Roy enjoyed watching old western movies, reading western and war novels, bow hunting, and fishing. He loved his daily walks, proudly counting out his “1K steps” each day.
Roy will be remembered for his gentle spirit, strong work ethic, and unwavering love for his family.
