April 15, 1945 – December 11, 2024
(Emmet) Don Gann, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, was born on April 15, 1945, in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, to Emmet and Ruby Gann. He passed peacefully into his eternal Home on December 11, 2024, surrounded by love.
As a child, Don’s family moved to the Modesto area, where he spent the remainder of his life. He graduated from Davis High School and soon after answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. Upon returning home, he began a long and fulfilling career in the grocery business, working for Lucky’s and Save Mart for over 35 years.
In 1976, Don met the love of his life, Cheryl Stuit, and they were married in 1978, sharing 46 cherished years together.
Don was predeceased by his father, Emmet Gann, and his daughter, Michelle Dawn Nielsen, who tragically lost her battle with cancer on December 17, 2023. He is survived by his devoted wife, Cheryl; his loving mother, Ruby Gann; his sisters, Sandi Cunningham (Glenn, deceased) and Karen Loewen (Danny); his son-in-law, Jay Nielsen; and his treasured grandson, Brandon. Don also leaves behind numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
A man of unwavering faith, Don served as a deacon at his church, where he became instrumental in its outreach to the Redwood Family Center. His dedication extended far beyond physical improvements to the grounds and buildings. Don’s heart was with the women and children seeking hope and healing. He took great joy in witnessing the profound transformations that occurred—women breaking free from addiction, finding Jesus, and reuniting with their families.
In his later years, Don discovered a passion for woodworking, particularly crafting unique creations from wine barrels. From lazy Susans to tables, sconces, fountains, and wine racks, his handiwork brought joy to many. While he occasionally sold these pieces, he mostly gave them as gifts, even donating some to hospice. For Don, this hobby was more than a pastime—it was therapy and a way to spread love to others.
Don’s life was defined by his generosity, faith, and love for others. His kind heart and selfless spirit touched countless lives, leaving an enduring legacy. He will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know him.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Modesto Christian Reformed Church, 2620 College Avenue, Modesto, California.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Don’s memory to the Redwood Family Center or a charity of your choice.
