Gene was born in Kosciusko, MS on April 7, 1922. He graduated from Ethel High School. He began his career as a grocery store manager in 1942 for A&P grocers (The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company) and was soon transferred and travelled alone to Hearne, Texas at age 19 where he spent the next 32 years as a super market manager for A&P in various locations throughout central and southeast Texas, finally locating to Houston, Texas, where he spent the last 10 years of his career working for Gerlands Food Fair, for a career that spanned 42 years.
His longevity in this occupation was a testament to his success as a store manager, not only in achieving financial success for the company he worked for but also his love for and ability to work with the people he hired, trained and supervised, many of whom became life long friends well into his retirement years when he was no longer associated with any store or company.
Gene received various awards and accolades throughout his career and was instrumental especially in relocating to problem markets and reinvigorating poor performing stores with financial success through his marketing acumen, customer service and people skills.
Gene enjoyed trips to casinos, investing in the stock market, college football and basketball, vacationing, and mostly enjoying the company of his wife Margie.
