Hoppy was born on March 17, 1953 in Houston, Texas, and passed away on May 19, 2023 at the age of 70. He is survived by his wife, Cindy Pynes Friday, mother Patsy Alford Friday, and sisters Trish (Paul) Walker and Peg (Scott) Tate. He was preceded in death by his father James Edward Friday and grandparents Charles and Lila Alford and Bessie Baron.
On January 15, 1975, Hoppy married Cindy and had 4 children: sons Doug (Leah) Friday, Nick (Alicia) Friday, Marc (Kat) Friday, and daughter Mandy (Roger) Fisk. Hoppy had seven beautiful grandchildren that he loved dearly: Abby (16), Tess (14), Will (10), Reese (11), Quinn (3), Luke (9) and Rory (1).
The story of how the name "Hoppy" came to be:
When Hoppy was a little boy, he loved watching the fictional cowboy show Hopalong Cassidy. His mom (Meemaw) would call him every day from work and would ask him, "what's your name, little boy?" And he would always answer, "Hoppy!" Thus, his name became Hoppy from then on.
He grew up with everyone, friends, family, even Cindy, calling him Hoppy. When the grandkids started coming along, he wanted them to call him Hoppy as well. So, he was known as Hoppy from his small little boy days all the way to his grandfather days.
Hoppy had the biggest heart and loved his family more than anything else. He loved nothing more than having everyone together, whether it was to celebrate a birthday or other holiday, or just because. He never let a loved one's birthday go by without a phone call and would call Meemaw every night at 8:30 pm religiously. Our lives will never be the same without him here, but we will carry his love for us in our hearts forever.
A celebration of life for James will be held Saturday, June 10, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Calvary Hill Funeral Home, 21723 Aldine Westfield Road, Humble, Texas 77338.
