

Sis. Maude S. Stewart, 97, of Corpus Christi, Texas passed away on February 9, 2018. Sis. Stewart was born on January 7, 1921 in Caldwell County, Texas to the late Hermie and Gladys Harris Thomas. She was the first child born of this union. She attended school in Gonzales County. She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age. Sis. Stewart was involved in the church as child and youth.
As a young adult, Sis. Stewart moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. Shortly after relocating, she joined St. John Baptist Church under Rev. Shelton Hall. After Rev. Hall’s tenure as pastor, Rev. Harold T. Branch served as pastor.
On May 6, 1954, Rev. Branch united her in holy matrimony to Warren George Stewart, Sr. Upon his unexpected death in 1965, Sis. Stewart was left to raise five boys. As a result, she found herself working two jobs. Sis. Stewart even went back to school to continue her education.
During her Christian walk at St. John Baptist Church, she served as an usher, organized and worked in the nursery, served in Northside Mission, and hosted Bible Study in her home for the children and youth.
In 1997, Sis. Stewart moved her membership to Rising Star Baptist Church under the leadership of her son, Rev. Dr. Mark D. Stewart, where she was baptized at the age 87 and continued to serve until her death.
Sis. Stewart is preceded in death by her husband Warren George Stewart, Sr., her sons, Billy Bonds, Clarence Stewart, Foy “Fat Cat” Stewart, one sister, Lucille Coleman, and two brothers, Charlie Thomas and Jack Thomas. She leaves to cherish her memory her three sons, Warren George Stewart Jr. (Pam) of Austin, Texas, Dr. Mark D. Stewart (Linda) of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Paul Stewart (Muriel) of Corpus Christi, Texas, three sisters, Ikoza Bennett of Corpus Christi, Texas, Joyce Barnes of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Dorothy Nell Thomas of Dallas, Texas, and three brothers, Ellis Thomas of Corpus Christi, Texas, Sammie Thomas (Cornelia) of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Tommy Thomas, Sr. of Luling, Texas; she also leaves 24 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 26 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
