

Doris Dick (Frye) Kunkel, 89 of Huntington passed away at 5:15 am on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at The Heritage of Huntington. Mrs. Kunkel had worked as a nurse in the office of Dr. Robert Furtado of Fort Wayne. She retired in 1985. She had also worked for 17 years at the office of Dr. Alfred M. Kierle in Cincinnati, who was a noted cardiovascular surgeon and author. Doris was a member of the Indiana Sorosis Chapter; member of the Chi Chapter of Tri Kappa where her mother was a charter member; she was in the first Brownie and Girl Scout troops in Huntington, and was in the original group of Job’s Daughters Bethel of Huntington. She was past treasurer and life member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 7 in Huntington. She was a past member of the First Presbyterian Church in Huntington where she was active with the Women’s Association and choir. She was the first in Huntington to be awarded the International Girl Scout “Thanks” badge for her years of work with the scout programs and publicity. She was active at the YMCA where she was a swimming instructor, taught synchronized swimming, and she was a member of the Aquatunes, a group of high school girls who performed synchronized swimming. She was on the YMCA girls swim team and was active with the YMCA board of directors in the 1940’s and 50’s. She was the first director of the Pink Ladies volunteers at the old Huntington County Hospital. She was a 1943 graduate of Huntington High School and later at the I.U. School of Nursing in Indianapolis, as a student in the Army Nurse Corp.
Doris was born on October 2, 1925 in Huntington, the daughter of Fred and Helen (Bendel) Dick. Her first marriage was to George W. Frye in 1945. Her second marriage was to David M. Kunkel on December 17, 1967. He preceded her in death on July 2, 2004.
Survivors include: a daughter: Donna D. (Brian) Schindler of Fort Wayne; a son: James D. (Vicky Gordon) Frye of Huntington; a stepdaughter: Mary Carolyn Walker of Holland, MI; a stepson: John Kunkel; 5 grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter: Cheryl Wilcox; stepson: David Kunkel and two brothers: Fred Dick, Jr. and Jack Dick.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 from 1:00 – 4:00pm and 6:00 – 8:00pm at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington, Indiana.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at 11:00am at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel.
Entombment will take place at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Huntington.
