To the family of Mr. Schacht,

I am so sorry for your loss.  May you take comfort in understanding the magnitude of his impact on young, impressionable, and talented minds.  Ask any student at Eastbrook High School who had the privilege of taking one of his advanced science courses and you'll receive similar comments.  He was challenging, supportive, thoughtful, and we all appreciated his wit.  Each of us has our own stories, but the one that comes to mind at this moment is something he said that I've thought about many times as I continue to grow older.  He once said that when his time came to go to Heaven he just wanted to ask God one questionWhy?  It was a statement that made me think about the delicate balance in life and how pursuit of scientific answers always provides yet another question.  What a brilliant, loving soul.  Thanks for sharing him with us. He'll be missed.

Dear Hobe,
RIP you wonderful guy.  Spending our high school years together meant many laughs and good times.  You will always be my hero for being a 'human tourniquet' for me when I decided to ram my arm through the gymnasium door (Jan. 27, 1962) and you rode to the hospital in Buzzy's car squeezing my right armpit to slow the blood loss.  Your students write of you as an amazing teacher - I'll remember you as an amazing classmate and superb human being.

Hobe will be so missed by us all here at Cardiac Rehab.

I graduated in 1996 from EHS. It was very funny the things you remember from his class. One saying I use on an almost daily basis " Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine". My dad also had Mr. Schacht in or around the 1970 time frame at EHS. When I was in my Freshman biology class when we started to write our term papers he pulled me to the side and said "James, what ever you do you can not write yours on the gestation period of the pig" I was like ok?!? He goes...go home and ask your dad about that one. When I arrived at home later that evening dad smiled and said that was his report topic from over 30 years ago. Mr Schacht was an amazing teacher, a great person most of all a great mentor. I hope these memories brought a smile to your face as he did to mine many days at my time in school. May you all be continually blessed by his memories and I Pray God continues to lay his healing hands on your hearts as you grieve.

Mr Schacht's Chemistry class was never easy for me to comprehend.  He could always pair a lesson with a story that made it easier for me to pick up and learn.  I always enjoyed his lectures.
Walnut creek was another place that I crossed paths with him when I would make my way out to play.  Was always great to see him a talk for a little while.  
A great example of a teacher that made a difference in numerous peoples lives.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Schacht.  Even though I did not like Organic Chemistry, he was my favorite teacher at Eastbrook.  I have lots of good memories from his from his classes.

Hobe was a quality guy, brilliant, dedicated, loving of family and always ready to help those in need.  He was the kind of person even as
the years rolled by who was always warmly remembered.

He was best science teacher I've had, helping me find something I'm good at, enjoy, and to provide a living.  I'm grateful. Very few days go by where I don't use something he taught me. Three memorable catch phrases- "if the label is right, the answer is right; cleanliness is next to passing; chem-is-try"

Mr. Schacht was very influential to me, inspiring a love of science that would ultimately lead me to the profession of pharmacy and to a career in academia. With his intelligence, education, and personal attributes, he could have been incredibly wealthy. Yet he chose to teach in a small town in Indiana,providing a foundation for so many students. My condolences to his family. He made such a difference in this world, my world.

We offer our deepest condolences to Tammy and family. Hobie was a fine person and will be missed.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

I was so sad to hear of Mr. Schacht's passing, as he was one of my favorite teachers. Although I thought his classes were difficult, it turned out that they were the best preparation for college courses I could have had. He helped lay the foundation of my nursing career. He will be missed.

Just wanted to address Nicky and Sandy how sorry to hear of their  brothers passing. I didn't know him but sounds like he succeeded very well in the teaching profession. I am sure it is hard to lose a brother and send my deepest sympathy. Dede Williams Sherman

Mr. Schacht, where to begin.  

Chemistry class was so hard with him, but I couldn't have passed Chemistry without him.  He wanted you to learn, dig, discover, and develop yourself.  My favorite memory of his classroom was when I'd walk up to him and ask him if he could help me with a question.  He would sit there and say "Yes," and go back to his work.  After a few seconds I would ask "would you help me?"  "No," was always his answer. I hated, and loved, that answer as a student.  He pushed me to strive harder in education, and how to know I could do chemistry.  

I was in a unique position with Mr. Schacht.  See, I also worked with him at Walnut Creek Golf Courses.  I got to know him outside the classroom, as he did me.  It was a great experience to learn more about him, aside from just being a teacher.

Mr. Schacht was a wonderful teacher that gave me a love for learning that has not stopped. Prayers for his family as they grieve.

Mr. Schacht was an  inspirational teacher, whose enthusiasm for his subject matter inspired many. I will always be grateful for his encouragement to excellence.

Mr. Schack was influential in the lives of our children and we are thankful.  He will be missed and our prayers and best wishes are with the family.

Mr. Schacht exemplified the best qualities of a teacher.  He didn't just demand excellence, but he supported, encouraged, redirected and laughed with his students until they suddenly realized they had reached it.

His effect on my life was subtle as a seed.  His effect continues to grow, mature, and have an effect on others.  He is not really gone.

I am sorry for your family's loss.  I am grateful to have had Mr. Schacht as a chemistry teacher.  I remember Mr. Schacht as an excellent teacher with high expectations coupled with a twinkle in his eye.  I'm glad one of the Nussbaum kids (Mark) could do justice with the subject of chemistry.  I remember when the Taylor Science Division honored Mr. Schacht for his role in the consistent success of the Eastbrook students taking chemistry at Taylor.  May you find comfort in the legacy he left in so many of his students.

Dear Tammy,  On behalf of Kay and me, I'd like to extend our heart felt sympathy for your loss of Hobe.  Hobe instigated many of the good and humorously crazy events during our HHS and early college lives.  Hobe, Tom and I initiated Rupert's quest to make it to the North pole.  It goes without saying that Hobe made that first trip a very memorable one.  We were lucky to make it back to Huntington again.  God bless you and your children.

Mr. Schacht was one of the very best teachers I ever had, and he had a tremendous, positive impact on my life.  It is largely because of his influence that I went on to become a chemist and a teacher.  His combination of good humor, friendliness, patience, high expectations, and an outstanding ability to explain science well has set a standard I still strive to meet.  I'm very thankful that I had the privilege of being one of his students.

I was so sorry to learn of the loss of Mr. Schacht.  I've shared many stories of one of the great teachers of my life with my husband and children over the years.  I will continue to do so.  His knowledge and humor will be carried with his students forever.

Thank you for all you gave. You were a phenomenal teacher. You have touched more peoples' lives than you could ever know.

God speed Mr. Schacht.   Thank you for every bit of knowledge, every laugh, and every memory you shared with so many of us. We are all better for having you for our teacher.
