Charles (Charlie) Arthur Lindberg passed away surrounded by family on Saturday, January 7, 2023. Known as Charlie, Dad, Gramps, Grandpa Woosh, his friends and family will never forget their cherished time with him. His stories, his grin while conspicuously feeding the family dogs at holidays, his love for his family and the Boston Red Sox, are all memories that will live on for years to come.
Charlie enlisted in 1944 and traveled the world with the Merchant Marines, spending time in the Panama Canal and the English Channel. During the Korean War, Charlie joined the Army where he was a Sergeant in charge of heavy tanks and trucks until 1952.
After leaving the Army, Charlie earned a Bachelors and Master’s in Engineering from Northeastern University while working. For 27 years he worked as an Electrical Engineer specializing in antennas at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory. He worked on many satellites for the US government and helped design the guidance system for the first Apollo flight to the Moon.
After retiring from MIT, Charlie moved to California but quickly returned to work for Hughes Aircraft Telecommunication & Space division, later acquired by Boeing Satellite Systems, where he helped design commercial communication satellites. He retired again in 2004 at the age of 77 after 15 years at Hughes/Boeing and lived with Staci and her family for the next 18 years in Holliston.
To say that he had an amazing and successful career would be an understatement. Just a few of his awards are listed below:
• 1988 MIT Lincoln Laboratory recognition of outstanding service
• 1993 Hughes Telecommunication & Space division - Superior Team Award for Galaxy IV-R Antenna C/I Improvement team. Recognition of outstanding performance
• 1995 Hughes Telecommunication & Space division - Technical excellence Award
Charlie was a jack-of-all-trades who could fix or build anything and was always willing to help with anything from fixing a broken door to teaching children how to swim, ride a bike, or play poker. He was also an expert in stocks and was always happy to share that knowledge. He was a loving grandfather who would welcome his grandchildren's friends to his house and made sure they felt welcome. All his grandchildren's friends loved him as their own Grandpa.
Charlie will be missed dearly by son Steven Lindberg and Eileen Lindberg of Holliston, Massachusetts, daughter Staci Evers of West Hyannisport, Massachusetts, and stepson Bob Watt and Bea Watt of California.
Charlie is survived by and will be missed by brothers Robert Lindberg, Richard Lindberg, and Art Lindberg.
Charlie is re-united with his late wife Patricia A. Lindberg, brother John Lindberg and his beloved grandson, Brian Evers.
The memories of Grandpa will be held dearly by grandchildren Bob Evers and fiance Lauren McCafferty, Patrick and Stephanie Lindberg, Alison Evers and fiance Brooks Candage, Sarah Lindberg, and Kelly Alves.
Charlie's unbelievable work ethic, never saying a bad word about anyone, never ending interest in learning, discovery and education has inspired his children and grandchildren to work hard and do all that they can to live up to his incredible example.
Visitation will be celebrated Friday, January 20, 2023, from 9:30-11:30am at the Doane, Beal, & Ames Funeral Home, 160 West Main St. Hyannis, MA. A Prayer Service will follow at 11:30 am.
