AVIS DE DÉCÈS
Charles Senteio
19 avril 1938 – 12 novembre 2020
Charles Senteio, 82 of Osterville, MA and Manchester, CT passed away on Thursday morning November 12, 2020. Charlie was born on April 19, 1938 in Hyannis the youngest of 5 children to the late Gregory and Frances (Gomes) Senteio of Hyannis. Charlie attended Hyannis Elementary School (1943-52) and graduated from Barnstable High School in 1956. He received a BA from Willimantic State College (now Eastern CT State University) in 1964 and a MA from the University of Connecticut in 1967. He worked his way through college employed by HP Hood and Sons and Thompson Construction Company. Charlie married Rhoda (Miller) on June 27, 1964. They lived in Enfield, CT before moving to Manchester in 1970. In 1985 they bought a home on Cape Cod in Osterville, MA. Charlie served in the U.S. Marine Corps reserve in 1955 and the U.S. Air Force from 1956-60.
Charlie worked as an educator for his entire 40 year career. He was passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people and all those around him. In 1964 he began his education career as a teacher at Barnard-Brown School in Hartford. He retired as Deputy Superintendent in 1994. He was principal of C.A. Barbour School (1968-70), then Waverly Elementary School (1970), and Assistant Superintendent (1972-78) of Hartford Public Schools. From 1978-81 he left Hartford to be principal of Keeney Street School in Manchester. In 1981 he returned to Hartford as Deputy Superintendent of Hartford Public Schools until he retired in 1994. He received many awards and recognition over his career. He was listed among Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities, was Chairman of Civil Rights Commission, member of the Student welfare and Activities Commission, and the CT Intercollegiate Student Legislature and Commission.
Charlie was elected President of his Sophomore Class and was elected President of the Student Senate for his Junior and Senior years at Willimantic State College. In the summer of 1971, he traveled to Tokyo to attend the Japanese-American Educational Leadership Exchange Program. His lifelong passion for education and support for under-resourced communities included serving as Chairman of the Board – Urban League of Greater Hartford, Regional Advisor for the Counsel of Greater Hartford Community College and affiliation with the American Association for School Administrators and the Citizen’s Advisory Committee for the Manchester Board of Education.
Charlie deeply touched those he met, whether they met him briefly or knew him for a lifetime. His humor, kindness, consistency and infectious personality was palpable, at work, on his boat, or creating furniture and other useful items in his woodworking workshop. Charlie was passionate about treating everyone equally, unconcerned with one’s vocation, age, or position in life. In his later years, he loved being on his boat and being around people. Charlie never went fishing, he went to catch fish. And he approached catching fish with the same enthusiasm which he applied to living his full and important life.
Charlie is preceded in death by his parents Gregory and Frances, brothers John and Roman, sister Lillian, Godfather “Bobo” Lopes, Godson Frankie, and many friends. Charlie is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Rhoda, two children, Charlene and Charles, his sister Margaret Pina, and several nephews who loved and adored him.
In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting that donations be made to the Greater Hartford Urban League.
Visitation will be held on November 20, 2020 from 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM at Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis, MA (livestreamed at https://www.dignitymemorial.com/en-ca/obituaries/hyannis-ma/charles-senteio-9901201). Rhoda, Charlene, and Chuck,
My deepest sympathy to you and your family.
My heart is broken. I have no words to express my sadness. Yet, so many words come to mind of my dearest of friends, Charlie.
One of the kindest souls I've ever met.
I met Charlie likely 20 + years ago, a fellow East Bay boater. Always a smile. Always a moment to chat. And always, always, "You be safe out there." Over time, he added, "harbormistress, you be safe out there." " I will Charlie. And you be safe out there also."
He looked after all of us, and we, him. A boating family, with Charlie at the helm. The season started when So Sabe, then So Sabe II was on the hook. The fish were waiting for Charlie and his crew. Always ready to help a fellow boater, whether needing a tow, to "right" their boat after a storm, find a missing mooring, an extra push or pull at the ramp, a repair to a dinghy (mine!) a tip on where the fish were hanging out, wave conditions, whatever it was, Charlie was there, and always with a smile. This summer, Charlie volunteered to be our official race boat at the finish of the Manatee Cup. He waited for hours, for all of us to finish. Because he said he would. East Bay will never be the same.
I wish all of you, Charlie's dear family, peace and love, and shared memories of a wonderful man, and a friend I will dearly miss.
I saw and spoke with Charlie a week ago Sunday, as I was coming back from my boat to the ramp, near dark. He put on his headlights so I could see better. We talked about the end of the season, the presidential election, the boats, his family, the virus. And next season. Hoping it to be better, safer. Then a virtual hug, and "you stay safe, and stay in touch now, harbormistress." "I will. You too, Charlie." The next day, he emailed me, he would be at my birthday Zoom on Thursday. Charlie left us on my birthday. I will always hear his voice, see that wonderful smile. We will always be spiritually connected. Harbormistress

To the Senteio Family,
First and foremost, my sincere condolences go out to Rhoda, Charlene, and Chuck from the Douglass family.
I can remember it like it was yesterday, the wedding of Rhoda & Charlie, as my Mom & Dad thought that this was “a match made in heaven”. Then the kids came, Charlene & Chuck (all C’s)
Charlie was the first person that took me under his wing when I moved from NY to CT, back Feb 1977. He took me all around, introducing me to his circle of friends and relatives. I felt like part of the family.
Charlie was indeed the Capt, and he was always right, even if he was wrong, no one dare challenge him. Charlie was the life of the party, a smile that would light up a room.
Charlie, your presence is still felt today. Gone but not forgotten. You live on in my heart, as well as in the hearts of others, that you touched in your 82 years on planet Earth
Now God has called you home Capt, to help with his mates. Truly a life well lived. No coronavirus could ever keep you from doing what you love. Fishing!
Their is a saying: “ Feed a man a fish, and you will feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you will feed him for a lifetime.
Charlie, your connection to the sea is testament to how you taught other to feed themselves.
Thanks for the lessons of life. May you RIP!

My deepest condolences to the Senteio family, friends, and colleagues. While I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Senteio in person, as a friend of his son, I can say without hesitation, that the love, care, respect, and appreciation he had for kindness, good work, and humanity shines clear through his son. Charles has often told me how lucky he was to have "picked" parents like his. I have no doubt about it. Love has a way of paving things forward. I hope the sorrow you feel today will be soothed by Mr. Senteio's legacy of love and support.
With love and sympathy, Elizabeth Talmont

Dear Mom Senteio, Chuckie, and Charlene,
Please accept my deepest sympathy and empathy for your great loss. There really are no words that can encapsulate what you are feeling. Thus, I offer you my heartfelt condolences, and a short story:
On one occasion, Chuckie invited me to visit Cape Cod with him, and stay with your family. Dad Senteio (as I always referred to him) made the kind offer to take Chuckie and me fishing on his boat, and I had the privilege of learning a good deal about angling that day. Dad Senteio was affable, patient, and quite humorous—as I battled with a surprisingly strong striped bass, which was trying to avoid his inevitable fate in Mom Senteio’s skillet. Dad Senteio ultimately helped me reel in the large fighting fish—which turned out to be one of the biggest we caught. I remember the Senteio family generosity as you divvied out a large portion of the day’s catch to friends and neighbors…and the delicious meals that Mom Senteio prepared with the remainder. I remember laughter around the family dinner table and a hospitality that welcomed me warmly throughout my stay. To this day I think of Dad Senteio whenever I eat bass. Though I have been blessed with extensive world travel and amazing experiences, my jaunt to Port Hyannis is still one of my favorite vacation memories, and holds a special place in my heart.
Throughout the years I shared postcards of my travels with Mom and Dad Senteio, and enjoyed chats with Dad Senteio, which were always chocked full of wisdom. He was a consummate gentleman, who proudly loved his family. Dad Senteio, you will be missed but always remembered fondly.
To my dear friend, Chuckie, you know what a wonderful role model of a man you father was. Besides his name, you share so many of his most endearing traits—like a thirst for education; an altruistic nature; and genuinely good character. Stoic as you may wish to be, just know that I love you and am here for you when you need me. Toya

I've been a friend and little brother to Charlene for over 30 years. I have an immense amount of love and respect for the Senteio family. Mr and Mrs Senteio embraced me and loved me like one of their children. I remember Mr Senteio kind loving humerous nature. He would always give me words of wisdom. I remember moving from Connecticut and Charlene would say Dad asked about you or when I got sick he express his concerns. He will always hold a special place in my heart. He was a good example of loving father and husband.
Miss You

Marija and I will always remember Charlie fondly. His smile was contagious and his outlook on life always positive. It was a joy to talk to him.
There were wonderful times. I recall during one tropical storm that we all headed to the Foxhole to ride out the storm. Charlie had such a rich life with some wonderful tales of what he had accomplished. He was, of course, always proud of his family.
I remember one day at the end of the season. I needed help turning my small boat upside down to store it for the winter—a short task but one that requires two people. I left a note on Charlie’s truck asking if he could help me “flip my boat.” Charlie assumed it was a big boat moored in the bay and went looking for it. Ever since that day he asked me with a sheepish grin if I needed to flip my boat.
That was Charlie. Always ready to help and always ready with a good word of encouragement. We will all miss him.

Charlie is a cousin to my wife Judith Lopes - Haig on her paternal side. Her uncle Bobo Lopes was his godfather, although I first met him when I became the superintendent of schools with the Hartford Public Schools in Hartford, Connecticut during the summer of 1991. Charlie was a long standing employee of the school district and fortunately for me and the school district made a lateral move and became my deputy superintendent.
We had an outstanding professional relationship and even after I left in 1994 we became very good friends along with his lovely wife Roda.
We constantly stayed in touch. He kept me updated on all Hartford news while I lived in Florida and the Middle East. We even met up at their home away from home in Osterville, Massachusetts where we would enjoy a day fishing. Everyone knows Charlie was an avid fishermen with a longstanding tradition of piloting and owning his fishing boat.
He is going to be missed and Judith and I and family send our deepest condolences to his wife and his lovely Charlene and Charlie Jr.

Dear Rhoda, Chucky and Charlene,
I am deeply sorry for your loss. Charlie was a very special person and a good friend to Hernan and me. He was a compassionate and caring individual who devoted his career and life to improving the education and lives of so many young people. In spite of his many successes and accomplishments he was unpretentious and modest. He had a warm and wonderful sense of humor that I always enjoyed. Charlie, you will always be remembered! May you rest in peace.

In all the 45+years that I was in the world of work, I consider Charlie Senteio the best boss I ever had. In my early 20’s, I was his secretary when he was Deputy Superintendent of Schools. His nurturing, mentoring and wisdom raised the bar for me whereby I was able to achieve excellence which not only benefitted me but all my future bosses. He believed that the higher the bar was raised, the higher the student would learn. He treated me like family and I got the privilege of knowing his beloved wife and his kids Charlene and Chuckie who were the lights of his life. I will always be a better person for knowing him. Rest In Peace my dear friend.

I am so terribly saddened to learn that my very good friend, Charlie Senteio, passed away this week. I knew him for 41 years since we first came to Hartford in 1979. He was my Deputy Superintendent during all of my tenure as School Superintendent in Hartford. In all those years we performed as an indivisible team of two. Regardless of titles I readily admit that I worked for him just as much as he worked for me. His decisions were my decisions and
vice-versa. We frequently could anticipate each other’s actions and reactions. He was my colleague, he was my loyal defender and he was one of the best administrators I’ve ever known. Above all Charlie was my soul-mate friend and we staunchly supported each other in working for the benefit of the entire school system and the larger Hartford community. For as long as I have a memory I will remember Charlie with the greatest affection. May he rest in peace and may God bless his wonderful family.

First time I met Charlie was at the East Bay ramp. He was just returning from a successful fishing trip. We talked about the fish, waters in the Sound. He was generous with his information. Always a welcoming smile. One of things I looked forward to was talking to Charlie at the ramp. I will now see him in spirit and memories when I go to East Bay. My prayers and thoughts to his family.

Sincere condolences to family and friends. Charlie will always hold a special place in my heart as my first mentor for school administration. His confident, relaxed way with teachers and students, became the model for my later work. Beyond that, I considered him a friend. I will miss him.

Mr. Senteio was one of the best men I have ever met. When I was a young child, I would crash his fishing trips and always go with he and Mr. Perry. During the summer weekends, I vividly remember waking up, picking up the phone to call Mr. Senteio with the hopes that the weather was good enough to go out and fish.
Mr. Senteio taught me how to fish but more importantly, he taught me leadership and values I carry with me to this day.
Mr. Senteio was a true role model and I will never forget all the skills and values he taught me.
You will be missed....

Charlie, Charlie, Charlie! I will never forget that look on your face when we went out fishing for the very first time and karsyn ( 12 or 13) at the time got a hook in her thumb and very casually commented “ nice dad!” To her father who had accidentally hooked her, she then removed the hook washed her hand in the ocean and proceeded to fish. I thought you were going to fall overboard, your facial expression was priceless. You my dear friend were the only Grandpa my children have ever had and you were the greatest gift we could have ever asked for, my heart is shattered but I know we will meet again one day. I love you Charlie.

I believe that I know something about Charles Senteio by way of my long friendship with his son, Charles. Some say the measure of man’s work on earth is found in the work of their children. If this is true, I know Charles’ Pops was one amazing man. May your family find peace and joy in knowing that the power of Pop’s influence ripples across time and space - into my heart and those of many others.
God Bless you all on your time of sorrow,

I want to thank Chuck and Charlene for sharing their Dad with me. BIG CHARLEY, is what I called him. He always gave me the advice a young man needed to become an "old" man. What I loved most about Big Charley was his "common touch" with me. He was a knowledgeable man who didn't mind sharing his wisdom and in my eyes he walked among Kings. I will miss him deeply and cherish his memories always.
Mrs. Senteio & Family, stay strong and remember that the Roby's will be here for you and will continue to uplift you all in our prayers. May God cover you and provide you with the strength you all will need to get through this very challenging time. Please reach out to us if you need anything.

Dearest Senteio Family,
Our deepest condolences. It's difficult to fathom this major loss.
We both worked for and with Charlie during our time with the Hartford Board of Education. He was indeed our staunch advocate, mentor, and friend.
I'll (Wanda) forever cherish the weekend that Louis Sharpe, Sylvia Ferris, and I spent in your Cape Cod home. Louis and Sylvia went shopping. I chose to go fishing with Charlie, his friend, and your son on Charlie's new boat. Charlie taught me how to fish for blues and I caught quite a few. It was an exhilarating experience. A life gift.
Thank you for the wonderful memories. You are all in our prayers.
