Charlotte E. Schaefer died on October 8, 2015 of natural causes. She had celebrated her 100th birthday on October 4th with family, friends and staff of the Cove at Thirwood Place, South Yarmouth, her home for the past nine years. Charlotte and her husband, Otto E. Schaefer, who died in 1997, were residents of Cotuit where they were active members of the Cotuit Federated Church and the Cotuit Historical Society.
Born in Chicago, Charlotte grew up in Buffalo, New York. She graduated from the University of Rochester, and after her marriage raised her family of four children in Winchester, MA before retiring to the Cape. She was an active volunteer with a number of organizations, and was particularly interested in helping those with illness and disability. For 47 years she and Otto cared for their profoundly intellectually and physically disabled son at home.
She is survived by children Richard E. Schaefer of Stamford CT, Betsy Schaefer Vourlekis and Alkinoos Vourlekis of Washington, DC, Eric H. and Patricia Shinney Schaefer of Cotuit; two grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. Her son David N. Schaefer died in 2009.
Private burial will be at Mosswood Cemetary in Cotuit, MA at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Cotuit Federated Church, 40 School Street, Cotuit, MA 02635.
