

David Michael McFarland, 86, a longtime resident of Hyannis died April 4, 2016. David was born in Newton, MA to the late Denman Thompson McFarland and Alice (Finnegan) McFarland. He grew up in Hull, MA and graduated from Hingham High School in 1948. After graduation, David enlisted in the Marine Corps. In 1954, while stationed on the Cape, he met his wife of 58 years Barbara (Bearse) McFarland. They married in 1955. David actively served in the military for 20 years earning three purple hearts during the Korean and Vietnam wars. After retiring from active duty, he worked for the Cape and Vineyard Electric Company as a meter reader and retired as a meter technician after 20 years. Over this span of time, David and his wife Barbara had three daughters.
David was a member of many golf clubs on the Cape and played in many amateur tournaments. He took up roller-skating when his daughter began taking lessons at Cape Skate in Hyannis. He skated in many competitions and won several medals for couples dance. David was known for sharing his arsenal of tasteless jokes willingly and on a regular basis. He enjoyed reading novels, driving luxury cars, and listening to classical music. One could often find him puttering around the Cape Cod Mall or having breakfast early Sunday mornings at the Sunnyside Restaurant in Hyannis. David was also a member of the V.F.W post 2578 where he enjoyed friends and beer in the downstairs bar with his wife Barbara.
David was predeceased by his wife in 2013, his brother Denman T. (Tinky) McFarland Jr. in 2001 and his daughter Veronica McFarland in 1988.
He is survived by his daughter Marjorie and husband Norman White of Cotuit, his daughter Shirley and husband Spear Holway of Hyannis, nine grandchildren, five great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend visitation Saturday, April 16, 2016 from 11am to 12:30 pm at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home 160 W. Main St. Hyannis, MA 02601. A graveside service will follow at 1pm at Oak Grove Cemetery 214 Sea St. Hyannis.
