Jennie Hatfield-Lyon died unexpectedly, at home on Tuesday, April 20, 2021. She had been diagnosed with breast and brain cancer in late 2020 and was making valiant efforts to maintain her positive energy and her infectious sense of humor. Blessed with innate curiosity and a formidable intellect, Jennie was a highly respected international human rights lawyer and University professor. She developed an unusual specialty in court, representing Canadians who had been kidnapped by U.S. bounty hunters. One of her cases is in the Ronald Reagan Library. Jennie is a 1973 graduate of Barnstable High School, and a 1977 graduate of Brandeis University and she obtained her Masters Degree in International Law from Columbia University in 1978. She was a loving and diligent caregiver for her late mother, Lois (Hallet) Betterley of Hyannis. She is the sister of the late Janice Hatfield, Mark Hatfield, Joyce Hatfield, and Carolee (Betterley) Creswell, and is survived by her husband, Daniel Lyon, as well as sisters Maryann Landry, Charlene (Betterley) Smith and a brother David Hatfield and many loved nieces, nephews and cousins. Jennie and her husband, Dan Lyon, raised a nephew/adoptive son, Damien, who is now the proud father of young Hunter Hatfield-Lyon. Jennie leaves a legacy of kindness, especially with respect to both people and animals in distress. A graveside service will be held at the Cummaquid Cemetery on Mary Dunn Road at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 28, 2021.
